Eastern Team Wins College Bowl!

Eastern Team Wins College Bowl

Aura Weseman, Marcie Mastronunzio, and Melissa Klar, under the guidance of Health and Education Professor Daniel Switchenko, scored a huge upset on Nov. 10 when they won the Second Annual College Bowl at the New England Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine’s Fall Conference in Providence, RI. Aura, Marcie, and Melissa defeated students in an exercise science knowledge contest (“Jeopardy” format) from nine other schools: UCONN, UMASS Amherst, Northeastern University, UMASS Boston, Southern Connecticut State University, Westfield State University, Castleton State University, the University of Rhode Island, and Fitchburg State College. The significance of the victory is that, unlike the other nine schools, Eastern does not have an exercise science major.  Joining the students were Eastern Professors Switchenko and Charles Chatterton, who is also president of the New England Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine.

Jeannine Phillips Crowned Miss Connecticut USA

Jeannine Phillips - Miss Connecticut USAJeannine Phillips, a business administration major at Eastern from Old Lyme who had never been in a pageant before, has been crowned Miss Connecticut USA! She won the pageant on Nov. 20, with some coaxing from her mother and boyfriend after they watched last year’s Miss Universe pageant. “They believed in me more than I believed in myself,” said Phillips.

Phillips credits Eastern for much of the growth and maturity that got her to where she is today. “Eastern armed me with the confidence I needed to succeed in the business world, the pageant, and beyond.” She has excelled in the business department, where she was inducted into the Delta Mu Delta National Honor Society. She works full time as a sales coordinator with UnumProvident, the largest disability insurance provider in America. Phillips plans to eventually earn an MBA and become an entrepreneur. The entire campus will no doubt be watching on April 21 when Phillips competes in Baltimore for the big Miss USA title.

Art Auction Benefits Katrina Relief Efforts

Art Auction ItemArt Auction ItemEastern’s Visual Arts Department raised $6,400 at an auction to benefit the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. More than 200 people participated in the auction, held in the Paul E. Johnson, Sr. Community Room of Eastern’s J. Eugene Smith Library. The auction showcased works by donated by Eastern students and faculty as well as local and national artists featuring art from a variety of genres — contemporary, cultural and ethnographic — including paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and functional hand-crafted objects.

“In the midst of human tragedy, the faculty decided that using our art as a healing vehicle in light of such horrific events would be the greatest relief we could provide,” said Claudia Widdiss, associate professor of visual arts. Professors June Bisantz-Evans and Anthony Cornicello, professor of performing arts, presented a live musical performance. Students, faculty and many area residents bought special holiday food to enjoy. “This event would not have been so spectacular had it not been for the great work of our volunteer Auctioneer Bruce Ingraham, who is also a metal sculptor, and who donated a metal sculpture,” said Widdiss.

Teddy Bears Bring Joy

Teddy Bear DisplayKeith Bazin (Congratulations to Angela and John!) poses with some of the nearly 200 stuffed toys that were delivered to families at the Holy Family Home and Shelter this December. Families living at the shelter on Jackson Street in Willimantic have a lot of new fuzzy friends to cuddle up with today.

The effort was the result of donations to the Fourth Annual Holiday Teddy Bear Drive, sponsored by the Office of International Programs and the Office of AccessAbility. The offices delivered 176 teddy bears and other stuffed toys to the shelter. A spokesperson for the families said the contributions from Eastern helped to create a special holiday for the children and made the families very happy.

Christiana Thomas, coordinator of international programs, ”We appreciate the generosity and support (of the Eastern family) of our Annual Teddy Bear Drive. We thank you for sharing the holiday spirit with our neighbors.”

Mark Your Calendars!

Take the time to visit the Office of Admissions and see “Visual History of Eastern’s Past: Looking Back, Moving Forward.” The exhibit, which runs through May 2006, is the work of graduating seniors in graphic design. It’s an impressive display of talent that covers Eastern from the time of the inception of the university right up until today.

The groundbreaking for the new Science Building will be held the afternoon of Feb. 28, 2006, following that same day by a dedication/ribbon cutting ceremony for the Child and Family Development Resource Center. More details forthcoming.
