Eastern Earns CL&P Rebate

CL & P check presentation

Ann Bazinet of Connecticut Light and Power presented a check to Eastern President David G. Carter on Nov. 2 in the amount of $64,026 in recognition of the high level of energy efficiency achieved in the construction of Eastern’s new Child and Family Resource Development Center which opened this fall.

CL&P promotes the Energy Conscious Construction program to encourage the design and implementation of cost-efficient energy measures for new construction and renovation projects that are in the design phase. In 2004, the program achieved a statewide savings of $2.5 million in utility bills for Connecticut customers.

“We are proud of the proactive efforts Eastern has taken with CL&P to make the new Child and Family Development Resource Center energy efficient,” said Nancy Tinker, director of facilities management and planning. “University officials and designers met during the early stages to discuss issues of energy efficiency in relation to building design. After construction was completed, CL&P and the state inspected the facility and deemed it energy efficient.”

This year’s program including such activities as pin the tail on the cat, pumpkin bowling, eyeball races, ghost toss, and the mummy wrap. George Weiss, founder of the “Say Yes to Education” program, was presented with the Chase Medallion at a luncheon on Oct. 24 at Eastern Connecticut State University. Presenting the medallion to Weiss were Eastern President David G. Carter and David T. Chase, whom Carter called “a true humanitarian” for his philanthropic support of Eastern and other community organizations in Connecticut. Chase is the founder and benefactor of the David T. In accepting the award, Weiss said he started the Say Yes program 18 years ago to demonstrate that “we can transform lives.” The program, which began in Philadelphia, provides funds to economically disadvantaged youth so that they may attend college or vocational school. To date, 778 youth in four cities have gone through Say Yes, students like “Jermaine,” who now works at NASA Control in Houston after a successful academic career that culminated in an MS in aeronautical engineering.
