• Bowdoin College “Dump & Run” is a move-out program designed to divert usable items that would otherwise end up in a local landfill out of the dumpsters and into a yard sale. As students move out they often have items they either no longer want or just do not have the room in their car to take them home. Traditionally these items ended up in the large dumpsters placed on campus during move out. "Dump & Run" Proceeds from the Bowdoin move out sale are donated to local non-profit organizations that help with the sale, and any un-sold items are passed on to organizations or individuals in need:

• California Polytechnic’s Recycling Program: Blue recycling bins are placed around campus so students can recycle many items they would otherwise throw away. Recyclable items include: aluminum, glass, plastic, books, toner cartridges, and hazardous materials such as paint, batteries, and fluorescent light tubes:

• Colby College has developed an extensive recycling program (called Recycle Everything! Save Colby's Usable Excess or R.E.S.C.U.E.) that involves composting food and grass clippings, using brush and tree limbs to make mulch for campus landscaping, and collecting many other items for re-use or recycling:

•Dump & Run, Inc. is dedicated to serving the University and College community in waste prevention techniques. Their goal is three fold. First, to reduce the amount of waste generated at Colleges and Universities by extending the useful life of items no longer needed by the student community at years end. Second, to generate capital for non profit environmental and social groups willing to participate in the projects. Finally, to educate the public about the problems regarding consumption of natural resources and the need to conserve those resources for future generations.
• Humboldt State University: Begun in the early 1970’s, HSU’s Waste Reduction Program has grown such that the university currently diverts more than 50% of its waste stream from the landfill. This program includes recycling, composting, and re-using many types of products: www.humboldt.edu/~recycle
• Middlebury College also operates very successful waste diversion programs:
