General Tips for Students Interested in Law School:

Students interested in law school following graduation should keep the following points in mind:

  • Grade point average is more important than the subjects in which you major or minor. To be competitive at the better U.S. colleges of law, a 3.5 or higher is required. BECOME OBSESSED WITH YOUR GPA.
  • The best way to prepare for the LSAT is to take as many difficult courses as you can. This may lower your GPA somewhat, but that will be more than offset by a good LSAT score. It is best to strive for the top 20%.
  • Admissions committees like to see courses taken outside the major; this indicates the student is intellectually inquisitive and willing to take risks in pursuing knowledge.
  • A double major is a considerable asset when applying to law school.
  • Since the law consists of reading English, writing English, and speaking English, take as many of these kinds of courses as you can.
  • Logic and critical thinking classes offered by the Philosophy department are very useful in preparing to take the LSAT. The LSAT will examine you in five areas: facts and rules; argument – in which you will need to distinguish between assumptions and conclusions; reading passages – to determine how well you identify core ideas; problem solving; and writing skills. TAKE PREPARING FOR THE LSAT SERIOUSLY.
  • Students interested in corporate law or who may go into practice by themselves should take accounting courses.

The policy at Eastern is that each student should receive personalized counseling regarding preparation for law school early and often in their time here. To receive this counseling, contact Professor William Salka in the Political Science Department or Professor Theresa Severance in the Sociology Department.
