Faculty Position Openings

Mathematics Major

The Mathematics major is designed to develop concepts and techniques for liberal arts students interested in the general field of mathematics. Courses are designed for those who wish to pursue careers such as actuarial work, high school mathematics teaching, sales support consulting, program management, financial analysis, or technical careers in industry or government and for those who want to pursue further study in graduate school.

Students plan an individualized program that will best suit their needs and goals in consultation with a faculty advisor from the Mathematics and Computer Science Department. Majors should consult with the department chairperson to choose an advisor in the third semester. Students must have courses approved by their advisor each semester.

Required Courses
MAT 230 Discrete Structures
MAT 243 Calculus I with Technology
MAT 244 Calculus II with Technology
MAT 300 Abstract Algebra I
MAT 310 Applied Linear Algebra
MAT 315 Applied Probability and Statistics
MAT 340 Calculus III
MAT 380 Geometry
MAT 420 Real Analysis I
MAT 421 Real Analysis II
CSC 210 Computer Programming I
In addition to the courses listed above, Mathematics majors are also required to take any two Mathematics courses numbered 300 or above, not including MAT 303, Mathematics for Poets, or internships.

Mathematics Minor

The Mathematics minor is designed to support a student's major program in at least one of several ways:

  • It directly supports the growing number of disciplines which are quantitatively or logically oriented, such as biology, earth science, and economics.
  • It directly supports any discipline where logic and precise thinking are important.
  • In elementary education, it provides a level of expertise which gives the student strong credentials to be a math leader in his or her school.

Required Courses
MAT 230 Discrete Structures
MAT 243 Calculus I with Technology
MAT 244 Calculus II with Technology
In addition, students must take three Mathematics courses numbered 300 or above, excluding MAT 303.

Secondary Education Option
Students who will earn a liberal arts major in mathematics may be interested in the teaching profession. The Secondary Education Option in Mathematics leads to certification in grades 7-12, enabling students to teach in either junior or senior high school.

Facilities and Equipment
The Department's mathematical computing facilities include a wide range of hardware and software; the department shares resources with the Computer Science Program. The department uses mathematical software in several of its courses, including Maple, Minitab and Geometer's Sketchpad. Students may access state-of-the-art computer facilties located on campus.
