Policies Pertaining to the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum

Implementation

 

All students entering Eastern Connecticut State University on or after Fall 2008 will be enrolled in the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum.

 

Policies Related to Transfer Students

 

Students who matriculate at a Connecticut Community College through the Transfer Compact initiative as of the spring 2008 semester will follow the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum upon enrolling/transferring to Eastern.

 

Students who transfer to Eastern before fall 2010 with 60 or more credits and whose progress toward graduation at Eastern will be significantly facilitated by completing the GER may appeal their placement in the LAC.

 

Students who transfer to Eastern with 30 or more credits will be exempt from completing the Liberal Arts Colloquium.

 

Students who transfer to Eastern with 60 or more credits will be exempt from completing the Tier I Health and Wellness category of the Liberal Arts Curriculum.

 

All students, regardless of the courses transferred to Eastern, must complete at least two LAC Tier II courses and the Tier III Liberal Arts Independent Inquiry. The Tier II courses must be in separate categories.

 

Policy on Completing Liberal Arts Core Curriculum Courses

 

All students must successfully complete the liberal arts colloquium and health and wellness Liberal Arts Core Curriculum requirements within their first 30 credits earned at Eastern. Students who fail either of these courses in any given semester must take the course again the following semester. If a student fails to complete these courses within the first 30 credits earned at Eastern the student will not be allowed to register for additional courses unless his/her registration includes the required course(s).

 

 

LAC Major and Minor Substituted Courses (LAPC policy – not intended for the catalog)

 

Departments or programs may request from the LAPC a substitution of up to two LAC categories (up to 7 credits) not including the Liberal Arts Colloquium or Tier III, for each major or minor program. The specific courses requested for substitution must substantially address the goals of a Tier I or Tier II category.

 

Courses within the major or minor program’s discipline may be submitted for substitution.

 

Request for LAC substitution for interdisciplinary programs must include the approval of the department(s) primarily responsible for course content where applicable.

 

 

 

Major and Minor Double Counting of Courses in the LAC

 

Majors and minors may designate courses that are included in the LAC as required or elective courses.

 

Up to two LAC categories (7 credits) in Tier I or II may count for both the LAC and the student’s major.

The LAPC seeks to assure students’ successful achievement of liberal arts outcomes while recognizing the special needs of transfer students. Approved in Senate Bill 2006-2007-6

For transfer students entering Eastern with 60 or more credits, the following (general education) requirements are waived:

I.B.         Aesthetic Awareness  3 Credits

III.B.       One laboratory science course  4 Credits

V.B.        Health & Physical Education  3 Credits

Policy on Completing Liberal Arts Core Curriculum Courses

All developmental mathematics courses, the mathematics general education requirement, and the freshman level writing requirement must be completed within the student’s first 30 credits. Students must satisfy any prerequisite before proceeding with subsequent requirements. Students who fail any of these courses in any given semester must take the course again the following semester. If a student fails to complete such courses within the first 30 credits and has completed 12 credits in residence, he/she will not be allowed to register for additional courses unless his/her registration includes the required mathematics and/or freshman writing course. This policy applies to all full-time matriculated students.
