Grants are awarded based on need and do not have to be repaid. At Eastern, grants are funded by the State and Federal governments and from the University's own resources. Students are advised to check on the availability of state grants in their home state, ask about local scholarships (clubs, unions, civic organizations, etc.), and read scholarship and grant guides that are available in their local libraries on the internet. Students are obligated to notify Eastern's Financial Aid Office of the receipt of any privately funded grants or scholarships.

National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant
In order to be eligible a student must:
Complete the FAFSA
Be a U.S. Citizen
Be Pell Grant eligible
Be a third or fourth year student
Enroll full-time
Have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA
Have declared a major in an eligible field, and enroll in courses required for that major
Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)
In order to be eligible a student must:
Complete the FAFSA
Be a U.S. Citizen
Be Pell Grant eligible
Be a first or second year student
Enroll full-time
Graduated from a "rigorous high school course of study"
These Federal grants have been recently created please click on the link for more information on eligibility requirements. Eastern verifies eligibility for these grant programs and will inform students if they are eligible.

The Pell Grant was established as a basic access program for full or part-time undergraduate students from low income families. To qualify for a Pell Grant, the student must:
| MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA : |
| * - Be matriculated, registered, and pursuing a first bachelor's degree. |
| * - Be a U.S. citizen OR |
| * - Be a permanent resident of the U.S. OR |
| * - Provide evidence from the Immigration and Naturalization Service that he/she is in the United States for other than temporary purposes, with the intention of becoming a citizen or permanent resident OR |
| * - Be a permanent resident of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands or Northern Mariana Islands. |
| * - Maintain "Satisfactory Academic Progress" toward a degree or certificate according to Eastern's standards as issued by the Financial Aid Office. |
| * - Not owe a refund on a Pell grant, Supplemental Grant, or State Student Incentive Grant received to meet the cost of attending any post secondary institution. |
| * - Not be in default on any National Defense/Direct Student Loan (currently known as Perkins Loans), Stafford Student Loan, Direct Loan, or Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) received to meet the cost of attending any instituion. |
| * - Not be convicted of the unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession or use of a controlled substance. |
To apply, a student must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) or Renewal FASFA. Grants range from $400 to $4050 per year depending on need (pro-rated for part-time study). |
Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG) are awarded to full or part-time students pursuing a first bachelor's degree. The conditions to be met in order to qualify for a Supplemental Grant are the same as those under the Pell Grant above. Funds are allocated to schools by the Federal Government and are limited. At Eastern, only Pell Grant recipients who meet our priority aid deadline are awarded SEOGs. Amounts vary. File the FAFSA. |
A CAPS award can be given to full or part-time students (both graduate and undergraduate) with financial need who are enrolled in a Connecticut public college or university and who are residents of Connecticut. The Connecticut Aid For Public College Students Grant Program is funded by the Connecticut Department of Higher Education, and the award amount cannot exceed financial need. Awards range from $50 to $3,000 per year as determined by the University. To apply, a student must file a Free Application for Federal Aid (FASFA) or Renewal FASFA. Funding is limited. |
Connecticut State Law authorizes the Board of Trustees for the State University to allocate funds to be given as grants to undergraduate or graduate students, both residents and non-residents of Connecticut, who demonstrate financial need and are enrolled as a full or part-time matriculated student in a degree granting program. Connecticut State University Grant awards at Eastern range from $50 to $18,000 per year depending on a student's need and the availability funds. To apply, a student must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) or Renewal FASFA. Funding is limited. |
