Writing Requirements

In 1989, Eastern joined a growing number of American universities—from Ivy League institutions to community colleges—to establish a writing-across-the–curriculum program. Writing Across the Curriculum at Eastern is designed to help students to learn how writing shapes and aids thinking; to understand the cultures and conventions of their disciplines; and, through practice and revision, to confront their (universal!) insecurities about writing in order to become better, more confident writers in the worlds they will enter when the graduate.

After writing an initial placement essay, students at Eastern complete the following 3 requirements:

  • ENGLISH 100, College Writing, or the equivalent.
  • An intermediate writing competency requirement, satisfied by ONE of the following options:
    • Submission of a writing portfolio of four papers written for courses at the 200 level or above. A form with details is in the English Department Office.
    • Passing the Writing Competency Exam, given by appointment. Contact the Writing Program for information.
    • Completion of a writing-intensive course at the 200 level with a grade of “B” or better.

Courses currently offered as writing-intensive at this level include:

    • ART 225, Asian Art & Culture (Visual Arts majors only)
    • ENG 200, Reading & Writing Argument (based on initial placement test or after passing ENG 100)
    • HON 200, Honors Expository Writing (Honors Students Only)
    • ENG 203, Writing for English Majors (English Majors and Minors only)
    • HIS 200, Historical Research and Writing (History Majors only)
    • PSC 210, Political Science Research Methods (Political Science majors only).
    • BIO 221, Cellular and Molecular Biology
    • BIO 234 Population Biology (open to majors only)

Also fulfill this requirement IF the instructor awards writing-intensive credit when reporting your grade to the Registrar (the “B or better rule does not apply to these courses).

  • A 300-or 400– level writing-intensive course in the major. Each semester, the registration booklet carries a list of these courses.

Students entering with fewer than 75 credits are required to complete all three stages of the writing requirements (see the Writing Across the curriculum Guide for more information on Transfer and Continuing Ed. students).
