| Dear English Majors: |
| I am writing to remind you that if you matriculated on or after Fall 2001 and you plan to graduate this December or May, you will need to turn in an exit portfolio to the English Department in order to graduate. The purpose of this requirement is to comply with a legislative mandate that all state universities assess the learning outcomes of their students. This means that the English Department faculty will be reading your portfolio to learn more about our program for English majors. For example, are you learning what we think we are teaching? |
| The portfolio will not be graded and it will not be returned to you. It must be complete, however, and it must be turned in to the English Department. As soon as you have a final draft of your senior seminar paper (ENG 462), you should include it. If you've finished senior seminar, we are assuming you've completed the rest of your major requirements. |
| This portfolio must consist of the following six items: |
- One paper from ENG 203, Writing for English Majors
- One paper from any survey course (ENG 212, 213, 214, 215, or 356)
- Two papers from different 300-level English courses of the student’s choice
- The final seminar paper completed at the end of ENG 461-462, Senior Seminar
- A reflective essay on the student’s academic experience as an English major
|
| The department chair will report the names of those students who have completed the portfolio to the Registrar. The Registrar then records "ENG 075" on the transcript. |
|
| The guidelines for the reflective letter and for the types of papers you need to include are enclosed. You can also find them in the yellow Guide for English Majors. |
- It will be most helpful to us if you spend some time and careful consideration in writing the reflective letter which accompanies the portfolio.
- The papers you submit should be clean copies that you have written for the courses we specify in the guidelines.
- You should make copies for yourself because the portfolio will not be returned to you.
- You only need attach a cover sheet to your portfolio and clip or staple the papers together. No fancy binders are necessary.
|
|
| Turn your portfolio in to the Chair of the English Department, Webb 225, as soon as your senior seminar paper is completed. It need not be graded. Please give it to our secretary, Ms. Miranda Lau, and she will make sure that I receive it. |
| If you have lost papers or transferred in and don’t have a paper for a particular class, please call me and I will suggest alternatives. If you have any other questions about this portfolio, feel free to contact me. |
Sincerely,
Elena Tapia
