The Department of English offers courses for its majors and minors as well as courses that support American Studies, Canadian Studies, Women’s Studies, certification programs, the Liberal Arts Core, and University Honors Colloquia.

The major in English is designed to provide an understanding of the complexity and versatility of our language and literature and to cultivate skills in critical and creative thinking, writing, and research. The study of language and literature is useful in a variety of fields, including medicine, law, philosophy, commerce, diplomacy, applied technology, and the creative arts. Literature and language courses broaden our perspective on the world; enable us to explore and consider human values; and enrich our personal and public lives.
