The Beginning Educator Support and Training (BEST) Program was
begun in 1989. This program provides support and assessment for beginning teachers through trained, experienced working teachers who serve as mentors, and evaluate the progress of new teachers.
Mentors assist new teachers to develop classroom management and instructional skills, and assist them to enhance their own knowledge of subject matter and improve student learning.
Student teachers and beginning teachers' skills are evaluated through classroom observation using the Connecticut Competency Instrument. The Connecticut Competency Instrument (CCI) is a list of skills which a teacher must learn in order to be effective in the classroom.
The following competencies have been adapted from the Connecticut Competencies.
