Unifying Theme

The theme for this unit is to engage students in using the Internet to do research about significant individuals from around the world. The unit is designed to challenge students to explore different cultures by reading biographies that are linked to the Internet. The Internet creates an interactive, dynamic research tool for students to use. This unit plan will integrate science, mathematics, humanities and history.

Objectives of this Unit

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

1.  Access the Internet for information about a culture in specific subject areas.
2.  Synthesize information gathered from the Internet about a particular culture, then
as a group design a creative presentation.
3.  Explore a particular culture in a specific subject area, then write an individual
     report.
4.  Demonstrate what they have learned about a culture and teach the rest of the
     class through group presentation.

Materials

Computers with access to the Internet; Internet site set up by teachers involved in integrated unit (See Websites for Cultural Biographies); overhead projector; screen; transparencies; and depending on what each group chooses to do for demonstration, different materials will be needed (See Cultural Biographies Project Sheet)

Grade Level and Tentative Timeline

This unit is designed for middle school grades, probably 7th or 8th grade would
be best. This is an integrated unit plan designed with the idea that subject area teachers, including the arts teachers work together collaboratively. Hopefully the teachers would allow the students time in class to do this project. It would make sense for the language arts teacher to help students with the written component of this unit. The history teacher would be a great resource person for students to use in getting background and context information about the culture they choose to explore. Math and science teachers would also be helpful in gathering information. Music and art teachers could help pull together the project by conferencing with groups on their plan for a creative presentation.

This unit tentatively would run about four to six weeks depending on the amount of time teachers would agree to give students in class to do the work.

Procedure

See Lesson 1

Evaluation

Students will be assessed on two components for this unit plan. The first one is on their individual reports about a specific subject area (science, math, humanities, and history) in the culture that the group has selected. The second one is on their group presentation. Students will also be required to do a self-evaluation (see self-evaluation form). Students will be given a rubrics in advance, so they are able to know what they need to do to complete the assignment successfully at a proficient level.

Lesson 1
Cultural Biographies

Objectives
Materials
Procedure
Evaluation

Objectives:

Students will be able to:

1.  Explore the Internet for information about cultures through biographies of
significant individuals in the subject areas of: science, math, humanities and
     history.
2.  Identify, in cooperative groups, which culture the student’s group will explore in
     more depth.
3.  Identify which subject area in that particular culture each student in the group will
do an individual research report on.

Materials

Computers with access to the Internet, Internet site set up by teachers involved in integrated unit, project assignment sheet (See Cultural Biographies Project Sheet), overhead projector, screen, and transparencies

Procedure

The teacher will lead a discussion about cultures of the world, brainstorming with
students about what they already know about some cultures. The teacher will list on overhead projector, cultures students suggest as well as some of the characteristics of each particular culture. Next, teacher will ask students to name any significant people from any time from cultures listed. The goal is for the students to become aware that people make significant contributions to their own cultures.

Students will then be handed a Cultural Biographies project sheet and the project will be explained, allowing time for any questions. The students then will be able to start exploring on the Internet the web sites that are already designed specifically for this unit plan. This group who developed this unit plan designed specific web sites. To expand this unit, however, other cultures, subject areas or significant individuals could be added.

Next, students will follow the steps in Part I of the Cultural Biographies project sheet. They will select any culture that is in the designed web sites and pick any subject area and read the biographies that might interest them. To explore more cultures, the group could divide up the different cultures among themselves. After the students complete this activity they will then begin working on Part II. As a group they will need to decide which culture they would like to study. Then individually they will need to choose a subject area they would like to learn more about. They may choose from science, math, humanities or history. Each member of the group will need to choose a different subject area so that more information about the overall culture may be discovered. Realistically, this would probably be as much as the class would cover for the first lesson.

As the unit goes on, students will complete a research report. Then they will work together again in their groups to determine what they would like to do to demonstrate what they have learned about the culture they studied. (Part III on the Cultural Biographies project sheet.) The suggestions for group presentations are related to Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences. The first suggestion is to use the computer to design a Power Point presentation about the culture. This would relate to Spatial Intelligence. There is a choice for artists to do a visual representation of their culture. This demonstration would also relate to Spatial Intelligence. There is a music selection for the students with Musical Intelligence. They may wish to compose a piece of music that reflects the culture studied. For those students with Bodily Kinesthetic Intelligence, they may decide to write a skit and dramatize what they have learned about their culture. Designing a time line incorporating culture studied with other important world events would demonstrate Math-Logic Intelligence. For the Verbal-Linguistic intelligent students, there is the choice to write and video tape a short documentary about their culture. Because students will be working on this project in cooperative groups, they will also be demonstrating their Interpersonal Intelligence.

Evaluation

The assessment for lesson one will be based on completion of the tasks assigned. Participation and cooperation in the group will be assessed. Also completing the task of choosing a culture and an individual subject area will be part of the assessment.

Cultural Biographies Project Sheet

Cultural Biographies

This is a project to explore world cultures through biographies of significant individuals in different subject areas.

Part I
Part II
Part III
Part IV

Part I

You and members of your group are requested to explore, on the internet site that is set up for you, the various represented cultures by:

1.  Selecting any culture
2.  Choosing a subject area of interest (science, math, humanities, history) and
reading some biographies from that culture
3.  Repeat steps #1 and #2 until specified time is over

*Suggestion:  to make best use of time, each member could choose a different culture to  explore.

Part II

Next, your group will need to choose one culture that is of most interest to your group to explore.  Once you decide as a group which culture, then you will need to decide who will explore each one of the subject areas.

*Each individual in the group will be responsible for one subject area in the chosen culture.  Each individual will be required to write a report on the subject area in that particular culture. (Length: 2 to 3 typed pages)

For example, suppose your group chooses Native American culture to explore.  Each member of your group is responsible to choose one subject area (science, math, humanities, history) under the Native American culture, and do a research report on whatever area they choose.  Please be sure everyone selects a different subject area to explore.  The research is to be done using the internet site that has been set up for you to use.

You may ask, "How many biographies do I need to read to do this report?" (There are 3 or more biographies from each subject area to make a selection from.)  The answer will depend on the biography selected, some contain connecting links that give more detail and information, and others contain less.  Remember that from the biographical material you should try to answer some of the following questions about the culture and specific subject area.

*(Insert some general questions about culture and some specific questions about
subject areas.)

Part III

As a group you will then share your research about your culture, and decide how to do a group presentation to share with the class.  Below are listed some suggestions.  Please feel free to come up with your own ideas for a presentation. Be Creative!!

1.  Using the computer, design a Power Point presentation about your culture.

2.  If art is your area of specialization, do an authentic visual using what you have
learned about your culture that is representative of it.

3.  If music is your passion, compose a piece of music that is representative of
your culture.  Consider building instruments from that culture to do a
     demonstration.

4.  Have you always wanted to be on stage?  Well, give it a try!  Write a skit and
perform it or do role playing from one the biographies studied.

5.  Design a time line that incorporates your culture.  Make sure to include
important world events, famous inventors, artists, composers, philosophers,
      and government leaders.

6.  Videotape a short documentary about your culture.  Include artifacts, interviews,
and background information from your culture.

Part IV

A self-assessment will be required from each member of the group.
