Effective PHYSICAL EDUCATION programs are an integral part of every child’s formal education. The five through eight course of study is a planned sequential progression of learning experiences, which contribute to the total developmental needs of each student.
The program has as its foundation a core of basic skills taught at the fifth and sixth grade levels. Students participate in three-week units, which stress the development of fitness, basic skills, teamwork and sportsmanship through the use of lead-up activities and actual game participation.
Seventh and eighth graders elect activities of interest, which will
carry over to adolescence and adult life. Fitness, basic and advanced skills,
cooperation and sportsmanship are stressed as they relate to each sport
or activity. Choices for classes and x-block include both team and individual
activities from among the following:
A change of clothes including shorts, T-shirts, sweatshirts, socks and sneakers is required for participation in grades five through eight. Shower facilities are available and their use is encouraged. Students who wish to shower must bring a towel from home.
Emphasis on individual improvement, development of teamwork, sportsmanship and respect for self and others are encouraged. Students are exposed to concept, strategies, rules, sportsmanship, and basic movement skills of a wide variety of sports and activities.
INTRAMURAL SPORTS activities are offered to all students during X-block and in the After-School Program. In addition, special events such as Olympics, Bowling Week, game days, tournaments, gymnastics shows, and pep rallies are offered periodically according to the needs and interests of students.
The INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORTS programs include seventh and eighth boy and girl’s teams for each of three seasons: soccer, basketball, and baseball/softball. Each team plays home and away games with schools from surrounding towns. The programs improve physical fitness, psychomotor abilities, and thinking/decision-making skills. Coaches stress teamwork, safety, good sportsmanship, and respect of the other teams.
