Silverstein's life, he has had numerous occupations including a cartoonist, a composer, a lyricist, a folk singer, and a writer. His books of poetry are favorites of children of all ages. The Giving Tree, one of Shel Silverstein"s earliest works, has been one of his biggest sellers, and one of the most succressful children's books in years.

Portland, Oregon's Beverly Cleary Sculpture Gardens
The Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden for Children has recently opened in Grant Park, near the neighborhood where Clearly lived as a child. Slightly-larger-than-life-size bronze statues of Ramona, Henry, and Henry's dog, Ribsy, are part of the whimsical fountain. When it gets a little warmer kids can play in the spray and Ribsy is just about the right size for a preschooler to sit on. The park is open and used throughout the year. What a great way to see favorite characters from Beverly Cleary's books come to lifesize. This very popular children's author often addresses issues in her books to help children cope with life situations.
