Three faculty members from the University of Hong Kong, Dr. Nancy Law,
Mr. Ho-cheong Lam, and Ms. Joanne Fong visited Eastern Connecticut
State University (ECSU) on Saturday, July 4, 1998, to discuss educational
technology and possible collaborations between our two universities.
Dr. Nancy Law is a specialist in teacher education with special interest in science education and the use of Instructional Technology in supporting teaching and learning. She has been involved in the development of computer aided Chinese language learning software as well as modeling tools for science education and is a member of the University of Hong Kong's IT task force.
Mr. Ho-cheong Lam is the senior research officer leading a number of software development projects on Chinese language teaching and learning.
Ms. Joanne Fong is the Executive Officer and Registry Secretary to the IT&T Task Force.
Local participants in the first half of the visit included
David
Stoloff, Interim Dean, School
of Education and Professional Studies at ECSU; Catherine
Lynch, History Department, ECSU;
Jacqueline
Bowman, Science Education, Education Department, ECSU;
Jianquo Zhu, Personnel/Affirmative
Action Office, ECSU;
Edmond Chibeau, Communication
Dept., ECSU;
Harold Shayer, The Willimantic Chronicle;
Amy Reusch Chibeau, Dance Videographer,

The visit began with a meeting in the Classroom Building for introductory conversation and a tour of ECSU's computer classroom facilities. By 11:30 am, the group participated in Willimantic's Boom Box Parade. Our guests from the University of Hong Kong will probably hold the record of having traveled the furthest to participate as spectators in the Boom Box Parade.
After the parade, there was a discussion on similarities and contrasts between the uses of Information Technology at the UHK and at ECSU.
At 1 pm, we reconvened for a reception at the home of Dr. Tina Fu and Dr. Sherwin Fu's home. Dr. Tina Fu is ECSU's Library Director. Also attending this afternoon session were Dr. Yuhang Rong, ECSU's Coordinator of International Programs; Mr. Ben Pratt, Director of ECSU's Facilities Management and Planning; and Dr. Dimitrios Pachis, Vice President - Academic Affairs, ECSU.
Dr. Stoloff arranged this visit via email following an announcement by Dr. Craig Blurton, (email: craigb@hkucc.hku.hk), a faculty member in Information Technology at the University of Hong Kong and former colleague in the California Association of State Technology Using Teacher Educators. Dr. Tina Fu, ECSU’s Library Director, and Dr. Yuhang Rong, Coordinator of International Programs, also provided guidance and support for this visit.
