On Campus Life of Summer Institute for Future Teachers Students

Housing:  An Overview

SIFT students live on-campus from Sunday night to Friday afternoon.  This arrangement allows students to experience college life firsthand.  It also provides and atmosphere where students from varying cultural linguistic backgrounds can interact and work cooperatively.

Students are housed in Occum hall, one of Eastern Connecticut State Universities many Apartment Complexes.

The Mentors / R.A's

Mentors/R.A's for this Years SIFT program are Resident Advisors during the school year at ECSU. This years Mentors/ R.A's were:

What happened at the Residence Halls?

Planned SIFT activities

Not all of the students time was spent in classes, some was given to them to do with what they but every night something was planned for the Residents of the SIFT program. Here is a sample.

Activities planned that week
Week #1 (July 5- July 9)
Ice Breakers to introduce new students (first night), Diversity workshop, Roommate game (how much do you know about your roommate?), Movie night.
Week #2 (July 11-16)
Time management Workshop, Drug and Safety workshop, Movie Night.
Week #3 (July 18-23)
Volleyball, Open Gym (students had full access to the gymnasium), Budgeting workshop, Movie night.
Week #4 (July 25-29)
SIFT Olympics, Volleyball, roommate game (how much do you know about your roommate NOW?), Picnic / movie night.
Activities were held in the evenings, following the conclusion of classes. Students were given plenty of time with which to complete their work.
