The 2007 Summer Institute for Future Teachers, the 11th annual residential program at Eastern Connecticut State University for future teachers who will be juniors and seniors in Connecticut's high schools, convened on Sunday, July 8 and closed on Friday, August 3. Twenty-six participants, from 20 schools, resided in Nutmeg Hall at Eastern Connecticut State University from Sunday evenings to Friday afternoons during this four week program.  They served as teaching assistants in the district-wide summer school program at Sweeney School in Windham Public Schools, studied professional and academic skills needed for future teachers, practiced and presented lesson plans, showcased their talents, participated in an online seminar, and prepared CultureQuest projects and electronic portfolios of their online websites. The goals of SIFT 2007 were to:

1) Reduce racial, ethnic and economic isolation,

2) Increase student achievement,

3) Promote multi-racial multicultural understanding, and

4) Build positive meaningful relations among students

SIFT is a program supported by a Connecticut State Department of Education grant to CREC’s Interdistrict Grants program, coordinated by Ms. Kathy Randall, email: krandall@crec.org, and to Eastern Connecticut State University, with Dr. Delar Singh, singhd@easternct.edu and Dr. David Stoloff, stoloffd@easternct.edu as program co-directors.
