4-H LIFT Afterschool Program

Windham Middle School

The 4-H LIFT Afterschool Program is a collaboration between Windham Public Schools and the University of Connecticut Cooperative Extension System. Students from Windham Middle School participate in the program Monday through Thursday, from 2:35 to 5:00pm. When the students arrive, the 4-H Pledge is recited and the students have 45 minutes of enrichment activities. At 3:30, snack is distributed and then the students engage in an hour of tutorial time. Students are dismissed after daily recognition rewards are distributed. Transportation is provided.

Volunteers, work-study, interns, and community service from the University of Connecticut, Eastern Connecticut State University, Windham Public Schools, and the community are recruited to provide supervision and interaction in the afterschool program. Transportation for staff from UConn is available.

Staff members are required to attend a short training session prior to working with the students. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, planning and preparation for activities, developing tutoring strategies, practicing behavior modification techniques that help the students with social and academic problems, and providing administrative or clerical support to the program coordinators. Additional training and workshops are available to the staff throughout the year.

4-H LIFT Summer Program is open to LIFT students and by invita-tion to the larger school community. This program runs in 2 three-week sessions in July and August. Summer LIFT is located on the UConn Campus in Storrs. Transportation is provided, and the students attend Monday-Friday, from 9a.m. to 3p.m. The students engage in a variety of educational and recreational activities, taking advantage of the resources available on campus.
