A message on NCATE from Dean Kleine.

The NCATE Unit Accreditation Board is meeting to consider the accreditation of colleges/universities, including Eastern Connecticut State University, today (Friday, March 26) through Sunday in Salt Lake City.  I am not certain where Eastern is on the agenda, but Salt Lake City is certainly on mine.

Have a great weekend.

Following is a message of thanks from Dean Kleine.
 ****************************************************************************************************************************************

The last document needing to be sent to NCATE, Eastern's rejoinder to the Board of Examiners Report, left the Office of the Dean at 3:55 p.m., March 9th.  And now the "madness" begins.  Eastern's accreditation status will be voted upon by the NCATE Unit Accreditation Board the weekend of March 26th-28th.

Considerable credit must be given to Shirley Ernst, Ingrid Enniss, Tuesday Cooper, Pat Kucharski, Kevin Gill, Nick Lacy, and, most especially, Hari Koirala.  Thank you's also to the four educators -Jennifer S. Emerson, Maureen Adams,Cathleen Ober, and Dorothy Drobney-who gave us materials to document their excellent work with students. And kudos to all of us for preparing an excellent institutional report which made the rejoinder so much easier.

It is my extreme pleasure to work with all of you.

Much thanks go to Barbara Tatro from CREC, Ellen Dalton from LEARN, Jackie Chorney from ACES, the staffs of Eastern's food services and facilities, the Education Club lead by Katie Balkan and Maureen Morse, and the Education Department and community for their support of this annual event.

Outreach to Teach 2004!
On Saturday, April 24th, CEASP will refurbish the West Avenue Community Center in Willimantic, which serves low-income families in that neighborhood. Plans include painting, landscaping, and other 'cosmetic' improvements; creating a small library room, arts and crafts room, computer room, TV and movie viewing area; and an indoor game area.

3) Diversity Seminar, Thursday, May 13, 1 - 4, Betty Tipton Room - please announce this event in your classes.

4) Message from Dean Kleine on the 4th Annual Excellence Expo:

The 4th Annual Excellence Expo will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2004, from 3 to 7 p.m.

Tri-fold poster boards are now available (AKA free) to all students preparing posters.  Students will be able to pick up their poster boards in each of the academic department offices after March 31st.

In an effort to better coordinate presentations/poster sessions/displays/etc., the Office of the Dean will be preparing a program book with specific times and locations for all presentations, which will include individual student and student team presentations.  Please send your list with name(s), title, and type of presentation for each of the students you have selected to represent "excellence" to Pat Kucharski no later than Friday, April 2, 2004.  We need to create a draft copy of the Expo program by Wednesday, April 7th so adherence to the April 2nd deadline will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter.

5) Campus Connections 2004:  A four-campus assessment conference, Southern CT State University, Friday, April 30, 2004.  Please contact David Stoloff for information if you are interested in attending.

EDU 509 Opportunity - Summer Session II  2004

EDU 509 will be offered during the Summer II session. Class members will participate in the United Nation’s Tunza International Children’s Conference on the Environment, held in New London on the Connecticut College campus from Monday, July 19-Friday, July 23. The Conference is expected to have an attendance of 600 children ages 10-13 from all over the world. This is an incredible opportunity to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime event, as this is the first time the Conference will be held in the United States. Plus, you get to work with a truly multi-cultural group of students who will be speaking the three conference languages of English, French, and Spanish.

You will be expected to be on site each day from 8:00 am - 6:30 pm to supervise students, lend a hand in workshop and field trip experiences, and help with the friendship circles (small group debriefing of each day’s events before or after dinner). Individual experiences can be framed here.

To participate, you will need to contact Dr. Jeanelle Bland Day at 465-4532 to let her know you will be signing up for this EDU 509 experience. This will be necessary to allow your entrance to the Conference activities due to tightened security with the international delegates. The deadline for contacting Dr. Day will be April 30, 2004. If you want to design your own experience, the earlier you contact me, the more likely it is that we’ll be able to meet your needs!

Pre-session training will be mandatory. Date of training to be arranged.
