The American Educational Research Association conference begins during this week.  Here is a segment from the AERA Position Statement Concerning High-Stakes Testing in PreK-12 Education - http://www.aera.net/about/policy/stakes.htm

Protection Against High-Stakes Decisions Based on a Single Test

Decisions that affect individual students' life chances or educational opportunities should not be made on the basis of test scores alone. Other relevant information should be taken into account to enhance the overall validity of such decisions. As a minimum assurance of fairness, when tests are used as part of making high-stakes decisions for individual students such as promotion to the next grade or high school graduation, students must be afforded multiple opportunities to pass the test. More importantly, when there is credible evidence that a test score may not adequately reflect a student's true proficiency, alternative acceptable means should be provided by which to demonstrate attainment of the tested standards. “

Here's a course that might be of interest to teachers and teacher candidates.

-----Original Message-----

Subject: [NAME-MCE] EDU 563: Anti-Bias and Multicultural Perspectives in
the Classroom,

SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY

SUMMER SESSION "A" COURSE

EDU 563:  Anti-Bias and Multicultural Perspectives in the Classroom,
            Grades Pre-K through 12: A Professional Training Workshop (3
credits)

Dates: Fri., June 13 (5-10 p.m.); Sat., June 14 (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.); Sunday,
June 15(9 a.m. - 5 p.m.); Wed., June 18 (5-10 p.m.); Fri., June 20 (5-10
p.m.
); Sat., June 21 (9 a.m.- 5 p.m.)

Are you ready for the challenges and opportunities of teaching an
increasingly diverse student population?  Do you want to prepare your
students to live in a diverse world by infusing multicultural perspectives
into your curriculum? In this course, you will engage in activities to
evaluate and confront teacher and student bias. You'll add to your own
appreciation of cultural diversity and develop ways to teach respect for
differences and build bridges of understanding among your students.
Interactive methods will bring alive problems that teachers really
encounter. You will learn about existing multicultural curriculum, including
the nationally recognized A World of Difference project, and learn
strategies for developing new curriculum experiences.  This workshop
includes group discussions, simulations, guest speakers, case studies,
videos, and sharing of multicultural resources.  For Education majors, this
course counts as an Education Department elective. The course is open to New
Haven Cohort students and all other graduate students.

*Required readings must be completed prior to the first class and will
be available at the bookstore.  For further information, call Judith
Buzzell, Professor, Education Department, 203-392-6431 or e-mail

A message from Professor Ross E. Koning, PhD
Chapter President ECSU-AAUP
Biology Department - Goddard Hall
email: Koning@EasternCT.edu
http://Koning.EasternCT.edu/

Greetings ECSU-AAUP Faculty,

I am pleased to announce that our on-line (html) version
of the 2002-2006 CSU AAUP-BOT Collective Bargaining
Agreement is on-line at the usual URL:

http://www.easternct.edu/aaup/cba.html

This version is, of course, unofficial...but we have worked
hard to make it identical with the printed version in content,
and have hopefully corrected most of the printed version's
flaws.

We encourage you to try it out.  All internal and some external
references are linked so navigation is better than in the print
version. You can also use the find and find-again feature of
your browser to search for words in the contract...so finding
items is perhaps easier.  On the down-side, the contract is now
in a single file that is sometimes slow to open if you are on a
modem connection...but we think your patience will be rewarded.

I also encourage you to right-click (PC USERS) or click-hold-drag
(Mac USERS) on the CBA link on the home page to DOWNLOAD
the contract to your hard-drive for improved loading times.  Our
home-page is:

http://www.easternct.edu/aaup

Best wishes for the fall semester.
