Update: February 2003
Dear Colleagues:
I have two items
for your attention.
1. First, the National Commission for Teaching
and
Please share the
information in this report with your state legislators and other policymakers.
In a nutshell, the report says that teacher retention is the reason we have a
teacher 'shortage,' and that actually, we produce more than enough teachers to
fill classrooms. Of those teachers trained, many do not enter teaching, and of
those that do enter, almost one half leave within five years. No other
profession has such costly turnover so soon, which perpetuates the 'shortage'
notion. Working on the reasons why teachers leave the profession so quickly is
what states and districts need to do, the report says. Of special note for
teacher educators, the reports says that attrition
rates for teachers who have prepared are one-half that of those who are not
prepared.
We've actually
heard some of these statistics before, but the report puts them together in a
package that can help reframe the agenda--with your help. As you create fact
sheets and brochures for policymakers, include this information.
2. Next, we're pleased to announce a new
publication that tells the stories of six institutions who piloted the
performance-based NCATE standards successfully. Navigating
Change: Preparing for a Performance-Based Accreditation Review, is now
available. You may download the order form from the website. The stories provide helpful information to
institutions currently engaged in the accreditation process and tho those thinking about becoming accredited. They are
honest accounts of the promises and pitfalls of efforts to meet new
expectations.
Finally, a
congratulatory note: Calvin Johnson, dean of the

INTASC Announces Two New Academies for July 2003
The
Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) is pleased to announce two new Academies: The
INTASC Academy on Building Effective Standards-Based Teacher Preparation
Assessment Systems and The
INTASC Academy on Building Effective Standards-Based Beginning Teacher Mentoring
and Induction Programs.
State Department
Personnel and Teacher educators face significant challenges as they work to
meet the requirements from both state departments of education and
accreditation agencies to develop credible standards-based assessment
systems. For many teacher educators, the
tasks involved in developing these assessment systems require knowledge and
skills not developed in their prior work.
The 2003
·
deepen their understanding of the INTASC Core Principles for
beginning teachers;
·
examine samples of effective performance assessments used in
teacher education programs;
·
learn strategies for developing an assessment plan for a teacher
education program; and,
·
learn strategies for collaborating with IHE colleagues to improve
teacher preparation assessment systems.
The
2003
In
this innovative Academy, workshop participants work to build a deep
understanding of the INTASC Core Principles and how they can be used to build
an induction program that assists beginning teachers as they work to improve
their instruction to students. After developing a solid grounding in the INTASC
Core Principles, Academy participants examine and explore the components of
effective mentoring and induction programs including:
·
qualities of effective mentors;
·
how to align your approach to mentoring to the beginning
teacher’s needs;
·
effective questioning techniques that promote teacher reflection;
·
how to set effective professional development goals and the most
effective strategies for assisting beginning teachers to meet these goals;
·
how to use student work to improve teaching; and,
·
the critical issues your induction and mentoring program must
address.
To
learn more about this summer’s Academies visit the INTASC website (http://www.ccsso.org/intasc.html)
or contact David Paradise at (202) 336-7068, Email: davidp@ccsso.org.

We have wonderful anti-bullying
lessons in the Michigan Model for
Comprehensive School Health Education curriculum. It's very
comprehensive--the issue of bullying is covered at every grade level
(K-12)--and of course, the lessons are very skills-based and based on models
of behavior change.

An interesting
resource shared by Dean Kleine –
Dear Colleagues,
The Council on
International Educational Exchange (CIEE) is pleased to offer
18 International
Faculty Development Seminars in June and July of 2003.
These 1-2 week
intensive overseas programs are specifically designed for
university faculty and
administrators in an effort to help stimulate
initiatives towards
internationalizing curricula. The
seminars are hosted
by overseas
academic institutions and feature lectures, coordinated study
tours, and
opportunities to meet with scholarly communities abroad. More
than 2,200 academics
have participated on the seminars since 1990.
We have updated
the seminars to reflect current global issues and added four

A message from Professor Ross E. Koning, PhD

Greetings
ECSU-AAUP Faculty,
I am
pleased to announce that our on-line (html) version
of the 2002-2006 CSU AAUP-BOT Collective Bargaining
Agreement is on-line at the usual URL:
http://www.easternct.edu/aaup/cba.html
This
version is, of course, unofficial...but we have worked
hard to make it identical with the printed version in content,
and have hopefully corrected most of the printed version's
flaws.
We
encourage you to try it out. All internal and some external
references are linked so navigation is better than in the print
version. You can also use the find and find-again feature of
your browser to search for words in the contract...so finding
items is perhaps easier. On the down-side, the contract is now
in a single file that is sometimes slow to open if you are on a
modem connection...but we think your patience will be rewarded.
I also
encourage you to right-click (PC USERS) or click-hold-drag
(Mac USERS) on the CBA link on the home page to DOWNLOAD
the contract to your hard-drive for improved loading times. Our
home-page is:
Best
wishes for the fall semester.
