Two quotes by George Washington Carver

Reading about nature is fine, but if a person walks in the woods and listens carefully, he can learn more than what is in books, for they speak with the voice of God.

How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these.    http://www.creativequotations.com/one/431c.htm

Subject: Research on Teacher Training

Here's study of research findings about teacher education.  Thanks to Diane Novak, an elementary school principal and veteran of many visiting teams as a member and chair.  I haven't read the whole thing yet, but found the abstract useful.  The research findings, not surprisingly, reflect my own views, so this is not an unbiased review in passing this article along to you!  Here's a quote:

"While program formats vary considerably, subject matter preparation, instruction in pedagogical knowledge, and the clinical experience are all important aspects of successful teacher preparation. Additional research is needed to determine the specific content components and program formats that have the greatest affect on teaching practice and student achievement."

An interesting resource shared by Dean Kleine –

Dear Colleagues,

The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) is pleased to offer

18 International Faculty Development Seminars in June and July of 2003.

These 1-2 week intensive overseas programs are specifically designed for

university faculty and administrators in an effort to help stimulate

initiatives towards internationalizing curricula.  The seminars are hosted

by overseas academic institutions and feature lectures, coordinated study

tours, and opportunities to meet with scholarly communities abroad.  More

than 2,200 academics have participated on the seminars since 1990.

We have updated the seminars to reflect current global issues and added four  new seminars in Costa Rica, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.  Other seminars being offered include: Australia, Brazil, China, Croatia, Cuba,

Hungary and the Czech Republic, India, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland,

Senegal, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, and Vietnam.

The application deadline is March 15, 2003, and space is limited, so apply

early.  Applications and seminar information can be downloaded directly from

our website at http://www.ciee.org/seminars .

For a new brochure or further information, please contact us by telephone at  212-822-2782 or toll free at 800-40STUDY ext. 2782, by e-mail at

ifds@ciee.org or visit our website at http://www.ciee.org/seminars .

Kraig Walkup

A message from Professor Ross E. Koning, PhD
Chapter President ECSU-AAUP
Biology Department - Goddard Hall
email: Koning@EasternCT.edu
http://Koning.EasternCT.edu/

Greetings ECSU-AAUP Faculty,

I am pleased to announce that our on-line (html) version
of the 2002-2006 CSU AAUP-BOT Collective Bargaining
Agreement is on-line at the usual URL:

http://www.easternct.edu/aaup/cba.html

This version is, of course, unofficial...but we have worked
hard to make it identical with the printed version in content,
and have hopefully corrected most of the printed version's
flaws.

We encourage you to try it out.  All internal and some external
references are linked so navigation is better than in the print
version. You can also use the find and find-again feature of
your browser to search for words in the contract...so finding
items is perhaps easier.  On the down-side, the contract is now
in a single file that is sometimes slow to open if you are on a
modem connection...but we think your patience will be rewarded.

I also encourage you to right-click (PC USERS) or click-hold-drag
(Mac USERS) on the CBA link on the home page to DOWNLOAD
the contract to your hard-drive for improved loading times.  Our
home-page is:

http://www.easternct.edu/aaup

Best wishes for the fall semester.
