Quotes on Education by Abraham Lincoln - http://showcase.netins.net/web/creative/lincoln/speeches/quotes.htm

"Upon the subject of education, not presuming to dictate any plan or system respecting it, I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people can be engaged in."
--From the March 9, 1832 First Political Announcement

"A capacity, and taste, for reading, gives access to whatever has already been discovered by others. It is the key, or one of the keys, to the already solved problems. And not only so. It gives a relish, and facility, for successfully pursuing the [yet] unsolved ones."
--From the September 30, 1859 Address before the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society

*****

from African Fundamentalism, an editorial by Marcus Garvey

http://www.isop.ucla.edu/mgpp/lifesamp.htm

“No one is ever too old to learn. Therefore, you should take advantage of every educational facility. If you should hear of a great man or woman who is to lecture or speak in your town on any given subject and the person is an authority on the subject, always make time to go and hear him. This is what is meant by learning from others. You should learn the two sides to every story, so as to be able to properly debate a question and hold your grounds with the side that you support. If you only know one side of a story, you cannot argue intelligently nor effectively. As for instance, to combat communism, you must know about it, otherwise people will take advantage of you and win a victory over your ignorance.

Anything that you are going to challenge, you must first know about it, so as to be able to defeat it. The moment you are ignorant about anything the person who has the intelligence of that thing will defeat you. Therefore, get knowledge, get it quickly, get it studiously, but get it anyway.

Knowledge is power. When you know a thing and can hold your ground on that thing and win over your opponents on that thing, those who hear you learn to have confidence in you and will trust your ability.

Never, therefore, attempt anything without being able to protect yourself on it, for every time you are defeated it takes away from your prestige and you are not as respected as before.

All the knowledge you want is in the world, and all that you have to do is to go seeking it and never stop until you have found it. You can find knowledge or the information about it in the public libraries, if it is not on your own bookshelf. Try to have a book and own it on every bit of knowledge you want. You may generally get these books at second hand book stores for sometimes one-fifth of the original value.”

News from Dean Kleine on February 7, 2003 -

I just got a copy of the Department's mailing to all school districts, which updates information on the No Child Left Behind Act.  This defines compliance for Connecticut public schools.  I am sending you a link to an earlier memorandum which specifically deals with the section on Highly Qualified Teachers, since this will have the greatest obvious impact on educator preparation programs.

http://www.state.ct.us/sde/circ/circ02-03/C-16.pdf

You will need Adobe Acrobat to read this file.

The fuller memo, dated January 31, was not on the web yet, but should be there shortly.  The emphasis on standardized testing detailed in that memo will also have an impact on what train teachers and administrators will need to know and be able to do.  This memo is listed as Circular Letter C-24, Series 2002-2003.  You can find the file of all Circular letters, including several dealing with NCLB, on the State Department of Education Website http://www.state.ct.us/sde .  Click on the "Commissioner" button on the left hand side of the screen and select the icon for "Circular Letters."

An interesting resource shared by Dean Kleine –

Dear Colleagues,

The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) is pleased to offer

18 International Faculty Development Seminars in June and July of 2003.

These 1-2 week intensive overseas programs are specifically designed for

university faculty and administrators in an effort to help stimulate

initiatives towards internationalizing curricula.  The seminars are hosted

by overseas academic institutions and feature lectures, coordinated study

tours, and opportunities to meet with scholarly communities abroad.  More

than 2,200 academics have participated on the seminars since 1990.

We have updated the seminars to reflect current global issues and added four  new seminars in Costa Rica, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.  Other seminars being offered include: Australia, Brazil, China, Croatia, Cuba,

Hungary and the Czech Republic, India, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland,

Senegal, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, and Vietnam.

The application deadline is March 15, 2003, and space is limited, so apply

early.  Applications and seminar information can be downloaded directly from

our website at http://www.ciee.org/seminars .

For a new brochure or further information, please contact us by telephone at  212-822-2782 or toll free at 800-40STUDY ext. 2782, by e-mail at

ifds@ciee.org or visit our website at http://www.ciee.org/seminars .

A message from Professor Ross E. Koning, PhD
Chapter President ECSU-AAUP
Biology Department - Goddard Hall
email: Koning@EasternCT.edu
http://Koning.EasternCT.edu/

Greetings ECSU-AAUP Faculty,

I am pleased to announce that our on-line (html) version
of the 2002-2006 CSU AAUP-BOT Collective Bargaining
Agreement is on-line at the usual URL:

http://www.easternct.edu/aaup/cba.html

This version is, of course, unofficial...but we have worked
hard to make it identical with the printed version in content,
and have hopefully corrected most of the printed version's
flaws.

We encourage you to try it out.  All internal and some external
references are linked so navigation is better than in the print
version. You can also use the find and find-again feature of
your browser to search for words in the contract...so finding
items is perhaps easier.  On the down-side, the contract is now
in a single file that is sometimes slow to open if you are on a
modem connection...but we think your patience will be rewarded.

I also encourage you to right-click (PC USERS) or click-hold-drag
(Mac USERS) on the CBA link on the home page to DOWNLOAD
the contract to your hard-drive for improved loading times.  Our
home-page is:

http://www.easternct.edu/aaup

Best wishes for the fall semester.
