Excerpts from

Educators undeterred by loss of Columbia

By Natalie Singer
Seattle Times Eastside bureau http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/education/134630126_spaceteach07m.html

Just 11 days before the shuttle was destroyed, NASA kicked off — for the second time in its history — a nationwide recruitment campaign to find teachers to join its next astronaut class, the Class of 2004. The first program, in which New Hampshire social-studies teacher Christa McAuliffe flew, was shuttered after the loss of her shuttle, the Challenger, in 1986.

As of yesterday, more than 3,600 teachers had applied, including 95 from Washington. About 20 percent of nominations and applications came after the Columbia exploded.

The wave of responses to the program after last weekend's shuttle accident reflects the resilient spirit of Americans and the resolute desire to explore the last frontier, said NASA spokesman Bob Jacobs. "Now more than ever, teachers and students want to be involved," he said. "You'd be hard-pressed to find many students who don't dream of being an astronaut."

"Learning science by doing science is a way to get teachers excited about it," said Wayne Sukow, who works with the National Science Foundation to develop teacher training programs. "It's the ultimate opportunity to teach," said Gerry Wheeler, executive director of the National Science Teachers Association. Wheeler helped form the guidelines for the new NASA program. "These teachers are going to bring life to the textbooks."

Dr. Lani Guinier, professor of law at Harvard University, visited Eastern on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 and offered a new perspective on Education.  The following is an excerpt from an interview found at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/sats/interviews/guinier.html .

“I use the metaphor of the miner's canary. The experience of those black and Chicano--or in Texas, Mexican American--students is the experience of the miner's canary. The miners used to take a canary into the mines to alert them when the atmosphere in the mines was too toxic--not only for the canary but for the miners. And the canary's more fragile respiratory system would give way, alerting the miners that it was dangerous for them to remain.

And my argument is that the experience of those black and Mexican American students at the University of Texas is the canary. And they are alerting us that the testocracy that we are using to admit everyone is poisoning the atmosphere, the educational atmosphere in the society as a whole. It's affecting all of us. But in this society, because of the legacy of racism and because of many problems that we have having access to a big conversation in which people can have more than a single opportunity to speak--and therefore they have to use their most dramatic claim, because they only get one time to say something and get people's attention--because of that, we think we have to locate the problem in the canary. We pathologize the canary. And then we say, well we have to fix the canary, as if the solution is to outfit that little canary with a pint-sized gas-mask so that it can withstand the toxic atmosphere in the mines.

And my argument is, heed the canary. It is signaling us that we are not doing much good for the society focusing simply on fixing the canary. We have to fix the atmosphere in the mines.”

News from Dean Kleine on February 7, 2003 -

I just got a copy of the Department's mailing to all school districts, which updates information on the No Child Left Behind Act.  This defines compliance for Connecticut public schools.  I am sending you a link to an earlier memorandum which specifically deals with the section on Highly Qualified Teachers, since this will have the greatest obvious impact on educator preparation programs.

http://www.state.ct.us/sde/circ/circ02-03/C-16.pdf

You will need Adobe Acrobat to read this file.

The fuller memo, dated January 31, was not on the web yet, but should be there shortly.  The emphasis on standardized testing detailed in that memo will also have an impact on what train teachers and administrators will need to know and be able to do.  This memo is listed as Circular Letter C-24, Series 2002-2003.  You can find the file of all Circular letters, including several dealing with NCLB, on the State Department of Education Website http://www.state.ct.us/sde .  Click on the "Commissioner" button on the left hand side of the screen and select the icon for "Circular Letters."

An interesting resource shared by Dean Kleine –

Dear Colleagues,

The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) is pleased to offer

18 International Faculty Development Seminars in June and July of 2003.

These 1-2 week intensive overseas programs are specifically designed for

university faculty and administrators in an effort to help stimulate

initiatives towards internationalizing curricula.  The seminars are hosted

by overseas academic institutions and feature lectures, coordinated study

tours, and opportunities to meet with scholarly communities abroad.  More

than 2,200 academics have participated on the seminars since 1990.

We have updated the seminars to reflect current global issues and added four  new seminars in Costa Rica, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.  Other seminars being offered include: Australia, Brazil, China, Croatia, Cuba,

Hungary and the Czech Republic, India, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland,

Senegal, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, and Vietnam.

The application deadline is March 15, 2003, and space is limited, so apply

early.  Applications and seminar information can be downloaded directly from

our website at http://www.ciee.org/seminars .

For a new brochure or further information, please contact us by telephone at  212-822-2782 or toll free at 800-40STUDY ext. 2782, by e-mail at

ifds@ciee.org or visit our website at http://www.ciee.org/seminars .

A message from Professor Ross E. Koning, PhD
Chapter President ECSU-AAUP
Biology Department - Goddard Hall
email: Koning@EasternCT.edu
http://Koning.EasternCT.edu/

Greetings ECSU-AAUP Faculty,

I am pleased to announce that our on-line (html) version
of the 2002-2006 CSU AAUP-BOT Collective Bargaining
Agreement is on-line at the usual URL:

http://www.easternct.edu/aaup/cba.html

This version is, of course, unofficial...but we have worked
hard to make it identical with the printed version in content,
and have hopefully corrected most of the printed version's
flaws.

We encourage you to try it out.  All internal and some external
references are linked so navigation is better than in the print
version. You can also use the find and find-again feature of
your browser to search for words in the contract...so finding
items is perhaps easier.  On the down-side, the contract is now
in a single file that is sometimes slow to open if you are on a
modem connection...but we think your patience will be rewarded.

I also encourage you to right-click (PC USERS) or click-hold-drag
(Mac USERS) on the CBA link on the home page to DOWNLOAD
the contract to your hard-drive for improved loading times.  Our
home-page is:

http://www.easternct.edu/aaup

Best wishes for the fall semester.
