Happy International Women's Day - March 8

"UNESCO considers education to be the single most effective means to achieve gender equality and women's self-empowerment. Article 10, relating to education states that it is by providing men and women with the same conditions of access to education and by eliminating all stereotyped ideas about the roles of men and women in society that we can move towards greater equality. Education is a basic human right, and each human being deserves to become master of his/her destiny.  "

Unfortunate news - two members of our community face hospitalization.  Fortunately, from the report below by Paulette, Dr. Richard Reynolds will be returning to us next week.  Unfortunately, Dr. Dan Thompson will be leaving for heart surgery and recovery on Thursday, March 22.

An encouraging message from Paulette -

"Hello everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that I spoke to Richard's wife this morning.  He had an angiogram yesterday and it showed that his arteries are working fine so they didn't have to do anything.  They did find out from the doctors that he had a small heart attack last September when he was on the operating table.  That probably accounts for the fact that he didn't bounce back as well as he should have after the surgery.  He will be back to work on Monday.  This wonderful news.

Paulette"

Education Department CAREs

WE CARE – We at Eastern Create Articulate Reflective Educators.

Do you dream about becoming a teacher?  Teacher shortages in mathematics, science, world languages, and special education and incentive programs to attract new teachers and to increase diversity among school personnel makes this a great time to fulfill your dream.

The Education Department offers programs which lead towards certification in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, and Secondary certification in Mathematics, Sciences, History/Social Studies, and English.  Teacher candidates complete majors in an academic subject other than Education, have above average grades, and have extensive experience teaching children.

For already certified teachers, we also have Master of Science degree programs in Reading/Language Arts (and RLA specialist certification), Science Education, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, and the new MS in Educational Technology.  This program is offered online through OnlineCSU – http://www.onlinecsu.ctstateu.edu;  other graduate courses may be taken online.

Come join us in community-dedicated projects - a summer reading clinic, a UTC-sponsored technology in preschool classrooms project in Hartford, a national consortium to enhance learning using the world wide web, and summer and year-round workshops for high school students considering becoming teachers.

For more information, please call 860-465-4530 or visit us at http://www.easternct.edu/depts/edu/edu.html.  WE CARE.

Fourth Report
3/1/02

As part of our participation with the ThinkQuest for Tomorrow's Teachers project, we have administered a survey to our student teacher candidates on their self-evaluation of their preparedness to use educational technology in their classrooms.  In the past 10 months, 104 certification candidates have assessed their preparedness based on the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards.

Based on this scale, KEY: Not prepared = 1, Somewhat prepared = 2, Prepared = 3, Well prepared = 4, the average ratings were all in the "somewhat prepared" range for all of these items, except an average rating lower than to 2 (1.8) for "Model and teach legal and ethical principles related to technology use" for the Fall 2001 student teachers.

The next edition's research report will feature whether any of these self-assessments on the ISTE standards were statistically different.  The table for this report may be found at http://www.easternct.edu/depts/edu/news/rca020301.html .

A Professional Development Opportunity and
Financial Support for the Development of
Future Teachers Clubs in Connecticut

Faculty members in the Education Department at Eastern Connecticut State University are seeking certification candidates and middle school and high school teachers who would appreciate support for the development of Future Teachers Clubs or Young Educators Society (YES) Clubs in Eastern Connecticut and Hartford area schools.

We envision that certification candidates would visit schools about 10 hours a week during the Spring 2002 semester and collaborate with middle school or high school teachers and their students in the development or enhancement of these clubs.  Part of this involvement might be virtually, through a discussion board on a readily accessible website.  Participants will be selected for an early June weekend workshop on developing websites for curriculum support in the schools and for a late June weeklong residential Institute for Future Teachers using Technology at ECSU.

Certification candidates will earn a stipend for up to $1,500 for their efforts and their cooperating teachers will receive a stipend of $500 for their support of these projects.  Additional stipends will be available for participation in the summer workshop and institute.

If you might be interested in participating in this project, please contact Ms. Hannah Sellers (email: sellersh@easternct.edu) or Dr. David Stoloff (stoloffd@easternct.edu ).  Thank you for your consideration of this project.
