Best wishes to all for a fulfilling and educational Fall Semester. The university opens on Monday, August 27 for the fall semester, with many opening week events, and classes starting on the Wednesday after Labor Day, September 5.

The School of Education and Professional Studies/Graduate Division is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kim Freeland, Associate Dean. Dr. Freeland has extensive experience in higher education:
Tennessee State University, Professor
Eastern New Mexico University, Associate Professor
Eastern Illinois University, Assistant Professor
Texas Women's University, Research Assistant
Dr. Freeland's first day at Eastern is today, August 24. On behalf
of Dean Kleine, please join her in welcoming Dr. Freeland.
Beginning Planning for Fall 2001 Semester
The Academic Year officially begins on Monday, August 27. Paulette Mares has already reserved WH 115 for every Thursday, 12:30 - 2, in the Fall.
Most of the courses for Fall have been assigned. We are still looking for student teacher supervisors, field experience supervisors, and a supervisor for the Graduate Seminar accompanying student teaching. There may be other adjustments due to graduate enrollment and to changes in faculty assignments. Richard and Ken will be receiving assigned time to serve as co-NCATE Coordinators - thank you, Dean Kleine, for your support.
As you know, Leslie Ricklin with be Chair and Ken Dobush will be Assistant Chair during the Fall - August 25 - December 29. David will back as Department Chair for Wintersession 2002.
Here is a breakdown of the Fall Chair assignments -
Duties of Chair - Dr. Leslie Ricklin
1) Meetings
a) Dean's Council - has been 1st and 3rd Tuesdays
b) Association of Department Chairs - has been 2nd and 4th Tuesdays
c) CARE, Graduate Studies, DEC, units
d) Meetings with Dean as needed
e) Administrative Council and other university meetings
f) Creative Advance - on Wednesday, August 22
2) Special events
a) Sunday Open House in mid-October
b) Open Student Advisement session
3) General advisement of students -
a) signing substitution forms,
b) advisement of transfer students during Advisement Center sessions,
d) help organize the comprehensive exams evaluation
4) Completing hiring of University Assistants for CARE and other positions
5) Curriculum revision leadership
6) Support of faculty – particularly new faculty members
7) Budget supervision
8) Support for searches
Duties of Assistant Chair - Ken Dobush
1) Scheduling
a) Any modifications to Fall 2001 assignments
b) Modifications to Spring 2002 assignments - mid-September
c) Finalizing Intersession 2002
d) First draft of Fall 2002 assignments - mid-October

Amy Grammatica has been hired to teach bilingual early childhood classes at the Multicultural Magnet program in New London.
Katherine Bart has been hired to teach second grade in Terryville.
Angela (Prince) Young has been hired to teach first grade in Putnam.
Donna Bourque has been hired to teach math in Stafford Middle School.
Courtney Martin has been hired to teach in an elementary school in Tolland.
Jarret Pepe has been hired to teach middle school in Greenwich, CT.

Educational Department Searches for Tenure Track Faculty to Start in August 2002

Position: Educational Technology
Qualifications: Ph.D. or Ed.D. in educational technology or related
field required. ABD near completion considered.
Position Description: The successful candidate will have at least three
years of experience in teaching or coordinating educational technology
instruction in PK-12 schools an/or in teacher education programs.
Responsibilities include teaching preservice and inservice courses in computer
applications in the classroom, curriculum development of online and on
campus courses in educational technology, and leadership of outreach programs
to regional schools. Duties will also include teaching other education
courses, grant writing, and administration of leading edge project to prepare
tomorrow’s teachers to use technology. Faculty members are expected
to advise students and to engage in scholarly work and university service.

Position: Reading/Literacy
Qualifications: Ph.D. or Ed.D. in reading/language arts or related
field required. Emphasis on bilingual or ESL teaching preferred.
ABD near completion considered.
Position Description: The successful candidate will be expected to
teach graduate and undergraduate courses in reading/language arts; teach
graduate coursed in the reading certification program; advise students
at the graduate and undergraduate levels as well as supervise student teachers;
develop professional relationships with area schools; and organize the
summer reading clinic for reading certification students. Other qualifications
include experience with miscue analysis and retrospective miscue analysis
as evaluation and intervention tools; school teaching at the PK-12 and
college levels; experience with diverse students populations; demonstrated
interest in research, curriculum development, and school/university partnerships;
and a commitment to a constructivist, meaning-based philosophical orientation
and field-based collaborative approaches to teaching.
