Summer Projects

The Summer Transition Education Program/Contract Admission Program (STEP/CAP) started on Monday, June 25.  John Sharlow, Hannah Sellers, David Stoloff, and Terrell Green will be facilitating the seminar discussions in EDU 098 - Introduction to the University - a non-academic credit workshop - on MTWR, 3:30 - 4:45 in WH 110.  The syllabus for this seminar is posted at http://www.easternct.edu/depts/edu/dept/edu098.html .

The Summer Institute for Future Teachers will start on Sunday evening, July 8 with an opening picnic. The program will continue through Friday, August 3, with around 40 high schools from many school districts throughout the state.

Michele Ridolfi will be the SIFT 2001 Director - Michele is an alum of our middle level program and a 7th grade English teacher in Tyl Middle School, Montville.  Hannah Sellers will be coordinating the program's field experiences and leading a seminar - EDU 102 - Mentoring in 21st Century School.  Leading EDU 101 - Teaching in the 21st Century - in the program are Terrell Green, Janice Palmer, and Paul Clemens, and several guest speakers - including Leslie Ricklin.

If you might be interested in participating in either of these programs, please contact David.  Both programs conclude on August 3.

Post-Graduation Activities

1) A Graduate Survey was mailed out on June 12.

We have received these good news items from our graduates -

Michelle Bibeault will be teaching kindergarten in Thompson.

Anne Woodmansee will be teaching kindergarten in Griswold.

Jennifer Geragotelis is teaching 3rd grade at Natchaug Elementary School in Willimantic.

Leanne Soucy will be teaching at Sweeney School in Willimantic.

Laurie Lambert will be teaching 1st grade at Natchaug Elementary School.

Peter J. Crump is teaching Secondary Social Studies in the Groton Public Schools full time.

Holly Mandes, ECE, is planning to study in a Ph.D. program for English at the University of Arizona and has received a GATship (tuition scholarship and stipend).

Laura Thibodeau, Elementary Education, is currently employed as a full-time teacher in the Clark County School District, Nevada.

Adam D. Johnson, Secondary History, is planning to study Urban Education, the Sociology of Education, and Educational Policy at Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Christopher R. Lewis, Secondary History, is planning to study Political Science in Virginia.

Amy Grammatica, ECE, is working for the Adults and Children in Trust Association in New York City this summer and is looking for a full-time teaching position in K-3 for this Fall.

Erin Egan, Middle Level 4-8, is currently teaching at Memorial Middle School now and will be teaching at Moran Middle School, 8th grade, in Wallingford, CT in 2001-2002.

Christina Kupfer, ECE, will be attending the University of Colorado in Denver for a graduate Reading Consultant program.

Other alumni news -

Michele Ridolfi, 1995 ECSU graduate and currently a 7th grade teacher at Tyl Middle School in Montville and this summer's Director of the Summer Institute for Future Teachers 2001, received the Promising Practitioner award from the New England League of Middle Schools.  Only four of these awards were given in all of New England.  The award is given to educators in their first three years of teaching.  The award included a $200 grant, free registration at the conference, an invitation to present at the 2002 conference next March, and a plaque.

"Good morning,

I'm sending this to all of you because I'm not sure who is and is not on campus this summer.  I just wanted to let you all know that I have been sorting through catalogs and vendor slips and forwarding some of them on to the Education Department. So far, most of my dealings have been with Julie Alexandrin. I know she is moving on, so now I'm sending envelopes to Ann Gruenberg. She and Sudah Swaminathan are the two department library builders.

But... because it is summer, business is a little slower at the library. Feel free to submit book requests
during our down time. If you do not submit orders through Ann or Sudah for the next month or so, I will
keep them posted with monthly communication and budget statements. Just forward your orders on to me.

I'm putting an envelope addressed to Ann in campus mail this morning. It should be in the department soon.

Educational Department Searches for Tenure Track Faculty to Start in August 2002

Position: Educational Technology
Qualifications: Ph.D. or Ed.D. in educational technology or related field required.  ABD near completion considered.
Position Description: The successful candidate will have at least three years of experience in teaching or coordinating educational technology instruction in PK-12 schools an/or in teacher education programs.  Responsibilities include teaching preservice and inservice courses in computer applications in the classroom, curriculum development of online and on campus courses in educational technology, and leadership of outreach programs to regional schools.  Duties will also include teaching other education courses, grant writing, and administration of leading edge project to prepare tomorrow’s teachers to use technology.  Faculty members are expected to advise students and to engage in scholarly work and university service.

Position: Reading/Literacy
Qualifications: Ph.D. or Ed.D. in reading/language arts or related field required.  Emphasis on bilingual or ESL teaching preferred.  ABD near completion considered.
Position Description: The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in reading/language arts; teach graduate coursed in the reading certification program; advise students at the graduate and undergraduate levels as well as supervise student teachers; develop professional relationships with area schools; and organize the summer reading clinic for reading certification students.  Other qualifications include experience with miscue analysis and retrospective miscue analysis as evaluation and intervention tools; school teaching at the PK-12 and college levels; experience with diverse students populations; demonstrated interest in research, curriculum development, and school/university partnerships; and a commitment to a constructivist, meaning-based philosophical orientation and field-based collaborative approaches to teaching.

as online course offering for Summer 2002.

Our Western Connecticut State University colleagues - John Caruso and Janet Burke - are also planning to develop an online team-taught on CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT THROUGH VIRTUAL FIELD TRIPS, as part of the grant from the Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium for the development of online MS in Educational Technology courses.

Also this summer, Hari Koirala is developing EDU 508 - Research in Education for a Fall 2001 online offering.  Ken Dobush is developing EDU 544 - Patterns of Development for a Spring 2002 online offering.
