Summer Begins on a Bitter Sweet Note

Congratulations to all of the Graduates, Students, and Department Members as we closed another successful academic year with a moving Graduate Hooding Ceremony and Commencement on Sunday, May 20.  Special congratulations to Shirley, Leslie, and Dan on the graduations of their children from veterinarian school, university and high school, and high school respectively.

Unfortunately, there has been an accident within our community -

Paulette Mares writes on Thursday, May 24 -

"I received some very disturbing news about Mary Lou Keables.  Apparently she was having some very heavy bleeding so they had to perform 5 hour surgery on her last night.  At this point, they don't what the outcome of the surgery will be.  Paralysis is a possibility.  I should have more information in a few days.  I will keep you informed."

Our prayers and thoughts are with Mary Lou, a veteran university coordinator, as she recovers from a fall while visiting a student teacher.

Better news on May 29 from Paulette -

"I have some very good news about Mary Lou Keables.  She seems to be recovering from her surgery very nicely.  Yesterday she was sitting up playing cards with her friend.  She recognizes everyone and was laughing and joking.  She will be going to a rehab center in a few days.  When I have more information, I will share it with you."

More good news on May 31 from Paulette -

"Mary Lou will be transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital (rehab center) either today or tomorrow.  Everything seems to be fine except for her left leg.  She doesn't have any strength or feeling in her left leg but they do feel, with therapy, this will come back."

Post-Graduation Activities

1) Please comment on the draft Graduate Survey that is being circulated.  We are planning to survey our graduates as we mail out their certification application forms.  This draft survey is also posted at http://www.easternct.edu/depts/edu/alumni.html

If you hear about news about our graduates, please share the information with Mitch Sakofs or David Stoloff.  For example, Hari Koirala reports that

Christina Kupfer will be attending the University of Colorado in Denver for a graduate Reading Consultant program.

2) May Documents are Available on the Campus Network

The 2000-2001 Annual Report may be found as a WORD document in the COMMON folder in the EDUCATION network drive (either Z: or U:).  Remember that if it opens as a Read-Only document, someone else already has it open - please return to the document later.

Please let David know if you have any questions on collaboratively completing the Annual Report via this method, or whether you would prefer a paper copy or emailing me the information directly.  I will send out an electronic copy of the initial draft of the report so that you might excerpt the information you need to complete and return it to me, if you would prefer this process.

Similarly, the 2000-2001 Education Department Chair Evaluation Form is available in the COMMON folder.  Please complete this form and send it as an attachment to Paulette Mares - mares@easternct.edu.  Or you might print out the form and give Paulette a paper copy for processing.

Contributions to the Annual Report are due by Wednesday, May 30.
Contributions to the Chair Evaluation are due by Monday, June 11.

Thank you for your assistance and support in this new way of completing these May documents.
