The Education Department mourns the unexpected passing of our colleague, Jean Thoresen on Thursday, November 23, 2000 at her home in Willimantic, CT.  A campus memorial service is being planned.

Dr. Thoresen came to Eastern as an assistant professor in September 1970 and was promoted to full professor in 1990.  At the time of her death she was chair of the Department of Sociology and Applied Social Relations.  She was past president of Eastern’s chapter of AAUP (American Association of University Professors), as well as a member of the Connecticut State University AAUP Executive Council.  She was an active participant in various faculty/professional affairs.

A memorial service will be held for Professor Jean Thoresen on Saturday, December 2, 2000 at 3:00 p.m. at the Abbey Chapel on the campus of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts.

A second memorial service at Eastern will be scheduled in the next few days.

Dr. Thoresen had recently established the Carl E. and Helen D. Thoresen Fund for Adoption Research and Scholarly Activities within the University’s Early Childhood Center in memory of her parents.
Individuals who may wish to donate to the Carl E. and Helen D. Thoresen fund in Jean's memory should make checks payable to the ECSU Foundation with a notation indicating the "Thoresen fund."
