The Software is "The Print Shop"

The objective of this lesson Plan is to integrate the graphic art with
writing.

Students will be shown how to use the Print Shop Software.  They will then
create a greeting card.  This greeting acard will be used to write a letter
to someone very special to them.  In this letter they will have to describe
the experience they had while learning the print shop and the things that
interest them.  The students will be expected to utilize proper writing
skills with detail and creativity.

The teacher will guide them throught the software program and ensure that the
letters are written in proper form with creativity and detail.

Each student will have 1/2 hour time period per day for one week.  The last
day they will be expected to complete the final draft.
 

Creating a Business Card with the
Microsoft Publisher Wizard

Grades 10-12

Curriculum: Computer Technology focusing on Microsoft Publisher

Entry Level Characteristics:
 Students will have a very basic understanding of Microsoft Publisher and what a wizard does.

Role of the Teacher: The teacher will act as a facilitator during the discussion and laboratory portions of this activity.

Objectives: 1. To gain a basic understanding of Microsoft Publisher commands.
 2. To use a wizard and answer the questions appropriately.
 3. To create a finished product.
 4. To learn the features that make a good business card.

Materials: Students will utilize the following materials during this lesson:
  ? Technical Computers Laboratory #1 Handout
  ? Computer with Microsoft Publisher installed.
  ? Printer
  ? Appropriate Writeable Media (disk, network drive, etc.)

Classroom Arrangement:
 Students will use an existing computer lab set-up with the seating being already designated in a previous computer lab period.

Timeline: This lesson will take approximately 45 minutes.  Students finishing early may begin creating portfolio items that are created during the “extra time exploration time.”

Methods:

1. The teacher will discuss with the students features that create a great business card.
2. Based on previous knowledge, students will start the business card wizard to create their own business cards.
3. The teacher should monitor for signs of technology-based stress and should try to alleviate the stressors.
4. As students begin to finish, they should check the business card laboratory assignment sheet to make sure all directions have been followed.  They should save their file as “Last Name Business Card.pub” in their appropriate network drive location.
5. Students should print out the business card as set forth in the directions of the assignment sheet.
 

Closure: The class should have a discussion of what types of problems they had during the laboratory.
 

Evaluation Criteria: Students will be evaluated using the rubric that is attached to the assignment sheet.

Developing a Business Card Using A Wizard
 

Assignment: Use one of the Microsoft Publisher Wizards to develop a business card.  After the wizard finishes creating the business card, please adapt the business card to fit the guidelines below.
 

Guidelines:

1. Make sure the business card has your contact information.  This would include your name, company name, address, and telephone number.

2. Place a slogan somewhere on the business card.  This slogan should be appropriately matched to your business.

3. Use at least one graphic that will match your business.  For example, an unmatched graphic would be a mailbox for a restaurant.

4. Format:
Two different fonts used
Two different font sizes used
At least one enhancement used (bold, italics, underline, etc.)

5. Make sure the business card is clear and presentable.  You should want to give the card to a customer and there should be no confusion about anything on your business card.

6. When your business card is complete, print a copy of the card.  You may only print once, so make sure that your business card is correct before printing!

7. Staple this scoring sheet together with your lab.
