A Lesson On A History Of Castles In America

 Objectives: To expose students to castles in the United States and the stories behind them.

Goals:  To show students that castles are not just in Europe and that the knights, kings and queens of America's castles were in many ways quite different from the likes of King Arthur and his troupe.

Intent: To have students research a castle of their choosing and to give an oral/written/visual report explaining where the castle is located, who had it built and why it was built. Furthermore the student will need to explain what role the castle plays today and include any other information that the student might find as vital to understanding the history and or importance of the castle.

Materials: The students will have access to the Internet as well as encyclopedias an any other text available from the library.  Teh students will also be required to link sites and images to their report.  In addition to this students will need to use Microsoft Word or Netscape Composer for the written portion of the assignment.

Assessment:  Students will be assessed on their ability to utilize the Internet and any other resources.  The students will also be assessed on their ability to use the Internet along side Composer or Word.  This would include their ability to link sites and images.

Grade Level: Any.  Involvement of the teacher will vary according to grade level but all students can particioate in this assignment with various adaptations

Time:  Variable, dependant upon grade level but a minimum of 10 hours.
