The EarthBook Project

A Summer 2001 Project of the
Eastern Connecticut State University VISTA Associates

A Project Co-sponsored by ECSU, Connecticut Campus Compact and the Corporation for National Service. For a full description of the project go to the EarthBook Project web page at http://www.easternct.edu/depts/edu/free/VISTAopeningpage.htm

Children's books with an environmental theme that are in libraries in northeast Connecticut are listed in this annotated bibliography. The list demonstrates the wide variety and the abundance of books that are available for parents and children. It is not a complete list of all of the related books and other resources that can be found in these libraries.  A key to identifying the libraries that hold each book is at the end of this list. Entries have not been added from Sterling Public Library or from North Woodstock Library.  These libraries will have many books that are either on this list already or that are similar to these. A librarian can help you look on the shelves or the card catalogue for these or similar books.

VISTA Associates selected the books on this list from the many that are held in libraries in northeast Connecticut. The selections reflect their understanding that children can become interested in the environment and in reading through books about farm animals, pets, wilderness adventures, and a wide range of topics with some connection to the natural world.  Some of the books are factual, or non-fiction (NF) while others tell made-up stories (fiction - F), and while some are appropriate for parents to look at with very young children others will be of interest to teenagers.

The VISTA Associates hope that this list encourages parents and children to visit public libraries, to read, and to develop an interest in wildlife and the environment. While the list points out specific items, by browsing the library shelves and searching the card catalogues at these libraries parents and children will find many more books.
