Some Notes from the

Teacher Education Faculty Council –

Tuesday, March 27, 2001, 12 - 2, LIB 204.

Purpose of the meeting:

Preparing teachers for PK-12 schools is clearly an all-university responsibility.  As we prepare for our Teacher Education programs' accreditation visit in Fall 2002 and for the ongoing management and evaluation of our programs, the input from all faculty members across campus is essential.

Title II requirements

Dean Kleine thanked all for attending and discussed the all university responsibility for teacher education. The institutional questionnaire for use in preparing the Title II institutional report was reviewed with a stress on the need for liberal arts and science preparation.

Other topics discussed:

Issues on Language and Literacy

Suggestion that those students who plan to teach are often less skilled in writing than any other area. There are more visual learners today and that students tend to be more busy with work and family than in the past.Often students are degree seeking instead of learning oriented. There is a direct connection between skills in reading and in writing.

Early Childhood Education students should have strong field experiences in literacy.

Articulation Processes

Discussion of community college tracks in Psychology – for ECE and for other psychology programs.Community college students don’t get enough advisement on ECSU’s Psychology and Sociology programs.Sometimes, community college students specialize in programs that may not count toward their final goals.Need for more evening courses.Perhaps certification should be on the graduate level.Problems with direct articulation of courses.Hard for Continuing Education students and part-time students to be integrated into the Education program.[75% of community college students are part-time.]

Science and Mathematics Education

Suggestion that there might be a need for a local alternate route to certification for science/math majors.Science students could use a 5-year program with certification and a MS in Education.Need for increased articulation with community college to assure that transfer students might enroll easily in upper division courses. There might be a need for a PRAXIS II exams review course.Need to make it easier for upper level students to take upper level education courses without conflict with their major courses.Science Departments are ready to discuss the development of a Integrated Science major;perhaps students doing an Individualized Major in Integrated Science might serve as a draft model for the proposed program.

History/Social Studies

Discussion of presentation skills and applications of the Internet in History/Social Studies Education.About half of the History majors are considering secondary education programs.
