Course Number: EDU 553
Credit Hours: 3 credits
Course Title: Computers in the Classroom and the Curriculum
Catalog Description:
Provides a basis for use of computers in educational settings, Topics discussed include the applications of software and the Internet for learning and teaching, productivity tools, and curriculum design and planning in educational technology.
Course Prerequisites:
Prerequisite: Admission to the Graduate Program
Purpose of the Course: Provides experiences for participants to develop skills in identifying and integrating current software and hardware for classroom instruction, develop skills in curriculum development and research using the World Wide Web, and plan for the applications of leading-edge technologies for learning and teaching.
Course Objectives: By the end of this course, the students will be prepared to fulfill the attributes of the Connecticut Teacher Technology Competencies:
1. Understand benefits of educational technology as it impacts student learning and instruction.
2. Understand technology related roles and responsibilities.
3. Apply problem solving strategies to issues involving teaching and learning with technology.
4. Demonstrate awareness of network capabilities.
5. Demonstrate awareness of emerging technologies.
6. Create learning experiences that align with state content standards, student technology standards and best practices.
7. Create new learning environments and develop new roles of teacher and learner.
8. Manage the use of technology in the classroom for learning.
9. Use technology resources to better understand students' needs and abilities in order to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.
10. Use technologies to support student centered learning strategies for all students.
11. Use educational technology to communicate/ collaborate with students, parents, and teachers.
12. Use online resources to communicate/collaborate with learning community and global community.
13. Use technology to collect and manage data related to teaching and learning.
14. Use technology to engage in ongoing professional development, reflection and lifelong learning.
15. Understand model, and teach the legal and ethical practices regarding information and educational technology.

TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS.
Teachers
demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts.

related to technology (as described in the ISTE National Education Technology
Standards for Students).

PLANNING AND DESIGNING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS AND EXPERIENCES.
Teachers plan and design effective learning
environments and experiences supported by technology.

Grading Procedure:
Participants receive credit for completing assignments that incorporate educational technology. The learning outcomes include:
1) developing a spreadsheet - classroom gradebook,
2) emailing analysis of online resources for learning and teaching,
3) creating a homepage,
4) evaluating software and developing lesson plans,
5) applying a database program for effective communication,
6) developing a PowerPoint presentation,
7) creating a curricular unit that incorporates lesson planning, software integration, and web-based resources,
8) reviewing educational research on educational technology,
9) preparing an educational technology plan.
