Catalog Description: Designed to introduce teachers to the microcomputer as a multi-faceted tool. Students will evaluate educational software from the perspectives of instructional design and curriculum integration. They will learn the potential for enhancing the learning environment using databases, wordprocessors, teacher utilities, and telecommunication packages. (1 credit)

 

Course Goals/Objectives

Goal 1.0 To evaluate selected software and web sites as tools appropriate to subject area and grade level.  Objectives:  Students will: 1.1 Evaluate software and web sites by intended audience, subject matter, and curricular use. 1.2 Identify the strengths and weaknesses of selected software and web sites. 1.3 Integrate software and the Internet in the planning of a lesson on a specific topic for a specific student.

Goal 2.0 To analyze how educational technology applications and tools may assist student learning and instructional management. Objectives: Students will: 2.1 Review journal articles and/or selections from texts on educational  technology applications for increasing student learning for specific educational settings. 2.2 Apply a specific educational technology application to a teaching challenge.2.3 Practice tools for curriculum development and evaluation, including word-processing, on-line databases, programming tools, and Internet applications.

Goal 3.0 To characterize the possible futures of technology in the classroom. Objectives: Students will: 3.1 Identify issues involved in the access and use of educational technologies.3.2 Describe how educational technology is being used in local classrooms.3.3  Predict the influences of telecommunications, networking, the  World Wide Web (WWW), and video technologies on instruction. 3.4 Develop their own goals for the use of technology in their education and teaching.

Section 1 – Class One

Wednesday,  September 4, 2002

Assignment One:

1.       Review syllabus and preview all of the assignments for this course. Assignments do not have to be completed in order. Please go to the Grading Rubric to determine which are INDIVIDUAL assignments and which are to be completed as a GROUP.

 

Note: GROUP assignments require only one copy of the assignment to be submitted to the instructor with a cover sheet bearing the signatures of all group members.

Note: PARTNER assignments require only one copy of the assignment to be submitted to the instructor with a cover sheet bearing both signatures.

 

 Assignment Two:

1.         If you don't already have a Yahoo email account, please go to Yahoo.com click on MAIL and then NEW and follow the directions and fill out the form. You do not have to sign up for any newsletters.

2.         Send me an email just to say hello so I will have your new Yahoo email address. Include your mailing address and a working phone number please. Attach your digital picture to the email.

3.        You will also need to activate your ECSU email account. Go to the computer lab on the 4th floor of Web Hall if you need help logging on for the first time, or if you have trouble with your password.

 

Assignment Three:

1.       Send an email to your Texas contact. Include some general information about yourself including name, where you are in your certification program, your anticipated teaching field and why you want to be a teacher (one or two sentences only please). Ask your contact for a brief biography including name, teaching assignment, and experience. Ask them to briefly describe their students and community. Bring to the next class to share with others.

 

Assignment Four:

1.       Visit the Connecticut State Department of Education web pages and send an100 word email to the instructor discussing three items (links) that interested you while you visited the site, and why they were of interest to you

2.       Spell check.

3.       In the subject line of the email type: CTSDE-your name Visit.

4.       Print a hard copy of your email message for your files.

 

Assignment Five:

1.       Visit the ISTE web site. Send me an email telling me what ISTE stands for and what's the purpose of the organization. Click on the link Standards Projects. In the purple box click on NCATE Standards. What does NCATE stand for? Describe the relationship between NCATE and ISTE. Select NETS. Under NETS for Students, search Lessons and Units. Locate one lesson plan. Email it to the instructor as an attachment.

 

Assignment Six:

1.       On the ISTE toolbar, click on TEACHER RESOURCES. Then choose the Curriculum link. On the page that opens, click on K-12.

2.       Choose a subject area of interest and click on the link. Visit one of the web sites within the subject area. Send an email to me describing the link you visited including its address. Compete the web evaluation rubric for this site.

 

Assignment Seven:

1.       Students will email to the instructor an annotated bibliography of 3 articles/book chapters either related to computer uses in their educational area or that complement their lesson plan. Due by the end of class Oct. 2.

Assignment One:

1.      Introduction to PowerPoint. Development of a PowerPoint presentation that can be used the first day of school to introduce you and/or your class. It should include at least 5 slides. Be prepared to share this during the last class

 

Assignment Two:

1.       Introduction to EXCEL. Development of a survey and resulting graph/chart; notes on creating spreadsheets will be distributed. Print a hard copy of your spreadsheet and graph and save it in your files. Send the completed spreadsheet as an email attachment to the instructor. In the subject line of the email message type: Spreadsheet-your name. In the body of the message, explain how you might use a spreadsheet in your anticipated teaching assignment.

 

Assignment Three:

1. Send an email to your contact. Ask what their favorite productivity tool is and why?

Assignment One:

1. Ask your email contact one way they use technology with their students. Bring to the next class to share with others.

 

Group Assignment

This will be an in-class small group assignment.

Overview of ThinkQuest Assignment

1.       Go the ECSU Education Dept home page and select Special Projects. Select ThinkQuest for Tomorrow’s Teachers and go to T3P-ECSU Projects Developed. Review several of the projects. You will be working in small groups to create a ThinkQuest Project. Each group assignment will include:

a.                   A title page including the names of the participants, a group picture and an overview of the topic.

b.                   Each student will then do a lesson plan related to the group topic including:

(1)    Learning context including expected outcomes and state standards. Also include the appropriate NETS student standards from ISTE.

(2)    Materials and procedures including approximate timeline

(3)    Modifications and enrichment including links to other web sites and instructional materials

(4)    Assessment

(5)    Each lesson plan must have at least three embedded links.

 

Be sure to include appropriate documentation and bibliographic information.

When completed the ThinkQuest will be submitted to the instructor for posting. Print individual hard copies for your records.

Group Assignment:

1.       Students will continue ThinkQuest project

2.       Students will use the scanner and digital camera to add materials to either their PowerPoint presentation or their ThinkQuest project.

 

Assignment Two:

1. Ask your email contact how they use the Internet and what is their favorite site. Bring to the next class to share with others.

Section 1 – Class Five

Wednesday, October 2, 2002

 

Partner Assignment:

This assignment should be completed with a partner.

1.       Students will select and review three Internet sites for appropriate inclusion in their intended teaching assignment. Use the linked rubric to evaluate the sites.

2.       Students will select and review three software applications. These programs should be identified as appropriate to their intended teaching assignment. Be sure to include as part of the evaluation the appropriateness and efficacy of the software for meeting state standards. Software catalogs will be provided in class.

 

Assignment Two:

1. Students will present PowerPoint presentation not to exceed 5 minutes each.

Assignment Three:

1.       Students individually will evaluate the use of email as a professional networking tool.

 

Assignment Four:

1.       Student will submit the three reviewed articles.

 

Final Exam

All assignments are due by Friday, October 4, 2002

 

Individual Assignment

1.       Students will email to the instructor a description of at least three ways they will infuse educational technology in their classrooms. Title your email 360 Exam-your name.

2.       Course evaluation form will be completed.

Assignments:

1.       Students will develop a PowerPoint presentation appropriate for the first day of school. Included will be a brief biography, an introduction to the course content, behavioral expectations and grading policies. This will require at least 5 slides.

2.       Students will develop a ThinkQuest project.

3.       Students will participate in a peer ‘networking’ assignment. This will include establishing an email account if the student does not have one, emailing that information to the instructor plus assigned exchange of email with a non-class recipient.

4.       Students will participate in creating a spreadsheet and chart/graph demonstrating the results of a group survey. They will create the spreadsheet in Excel and email the assignment as an attachment to the instructor.

5.       Students will:

a.                   Send an 100 word email to the instructor discussing three items of interest that you found while visiting the Connecticut State Department of Education web pages and why they were of particular interest to you.

b.                   After visiting the ISTE Recommended Foundations in Technology for All Teachers web site, students will complete a related assignment.

6.       Students will complete and email to the instructor software reviews for at least 3 software packages. Software catalogs will be provided in class. Web addresses of software companies and sources of additional reviews will also be provided. Submit the review form(s) to the instructor (This is a small group assignment).

7.       Students must locate and evaluate at least three web sites using an evaluation rubric. Two sites must complement their ThinkQuest lesson plan. Submit the evaluation(s) to the instructor (This is a small group assignment).

8.       Students will email to the instructor an annotated bibliography of 3 articles/book chapters either related to computer uses in their educational area or that complement their lesson plan. (This will be a small group project.)

9.       Students will use a scanner and digital camera to enhance either their PowerPoint presentation or their ThinkQuest project.

*Prior to the course closing date if a student has not completed the work, he or she must develop with the instructor an "incomplete" contract describing when they expect to complete their assignments.  These contracts will include a late penalty  - students will lose a grade (i.e. 90 or more points will earn a B, 80 -89 will earn a C, etc.) for missing this due date.   If an "incomplete" contract has not been developed by this end of course date, the student will receive a grade based on the number of points earned for completed assignments.
