Teaching in Support of Student Success
At a recent
meeting of the Professional and Organizational Development
(POD) Network, First-Year Program Director Martin A. Levin attended a
session presented by Terri Tarr, Peggy Weissinger and Rhett McDaniel from
Indiana-Perdue University
in
Indianapolis describing an on-line faculty
development series they designed. They
have given the Center for
Educational Excellence permission to make use of this on-line service, free
of charge.
The
six modules provide a comprehensive overview of teaching and learning
issues.
You may pick and choose among the modules and approach them
in any order you like, designing your own faculty development program.
Learning
Theory
In the Understanding Learning Theory Module,
you will consider how the work of cognitive scientists can help you design more
effective instruction for your students.
You will do this by applying general principles of learning
to instructional design,
examining how learning changes over the college years,
and exploring individual differences in how people learn.
Course
Design
Enhance your course by aligning objectives,
assessment strategies, and course
activities in the Course Design Module. It will
assist you in implementing the
course design process into your professional
practice without feeling overwhelmed. Whether you are redesigning or refining
an existing course or developing a new course, this module should help.
Inclusive
Teaching
The Inclusive Teaching Module offers strategies
for integrating multicultural content into your
course as well as highlighting
the process of engaging all students through diverse
content and instruction. This module's structure is loosely based on Kitano's
(1997) paradigm for multicultural course change.
The paradigm follows curriculum
through stages: from an exclusive environment to
an inclusive classroom until
arriving at a truly transformed curriculum.
Active
Learning
Explore strategies that help students process
and retain course content. There are
many options for more involved active learning
activities to promote deeper levels
of learning. The Active Learning Module introduces
you to low-risk, quick and
simple forms of active learning.
Assessment
Strategies
Develop more efficient, accurate, and consistent
course grading procedures by
working through this module. You will learn ways
to help students understand
what you want them to learn and to
design
instruction to facilitate their learning.
Classroom
Management
Reflect on the impact of instructor attitude
on classroom management decisions in
this module. Time will be spent discussing how to maintain
a positive learning
climate for a diverse population. Also, you will
be introduced to conflict manage-
ment techniques and IUPUI's Disruptive Student
Conduct and Academic Mis-
conduct Procedures.
