January 31 - "Student Technology Skills Assessment Across Discplines" Alex Citurs, Department of Business Administration
An overview of preliminary findings of incoming student skills for Fall 2007 semester and possible implications.
February 7 - "Everything You Wanted to Know About Eastern's First-Year Program." Martin Levin, Director, First-Year Program
In the fall of 2009, all first-time, first-year students will be required to enroll in a fall LAC or Major cluster in addition to an already required spring colloquium. This presentation will provide information and answer questions about the First-Year Program.
February 25 (Monday) - "Undergraduate Research/Creative/Professional Activities at Eastern: An interactive panel discussion." James (Drew) Hyatt (EES), Jeanelle Day (Education), Katalin Eibel-Spanyi (Business Administration),
Madeleine Fugere (Psychology), Gail Gelburd (Visual Arts), Adam Lambert (Biology), Benjamin Pauley (English)
This panel discussion examines curent practices and future directions for promoting collaboration between faculty and students at Eastern through undergraduate research/creative/professional activities (UR). Panelists span the full career-arc for faculty and provide perspective from all major areas of inquiry. Discussion will be guided by open questions (circulated via e-mail prior to the event) that probe ways in which UR is and can be used to attract and retain strong students, engage students throughout their careers at Eastern, and benefit faculty mentors. Audience participation is encouraged.
April 3 - "Advising First-Generation College Students" Susan Heyward, Angela Bazin, Terrell Adgers, Daniel Donaghy, Claudia Widdiss, John Beck
Susan Heyward, Director of the Academic Advisement Center, and a panel of faculty and professional staff, will discuss advising first-generation college students.
April 10 - "Designing & Delivering Your 1st On-line Course." Catherine Tannahill (Education) and David Oyanadel (CIT)
Designing and delivering on-line education presents several unique challenges and opportunities. On-line courses can allow students to pace their learning, expand enrollment options and create a higher level of class interaction. Please join Dr. Catherine Tannahill and David Oyanadel in a discussion about implementing proven practices in teaching and learning in an on-line environment.
April 21 (Monday) - "Disciplinary Rhetoric and You." Rita Malenczyk, Department of English
Rita Malenczyk, writing program director, will lead a discussion about the different genres and styles of writing used in different disciplines and how we might help our students to understand them.
