Why Study In Any of the Business Programs at Eastern?

ECSU offers unique business programs in Accounting, Business Administration and Business Information Systems. They enable students to develop a theoretical and pragmatic understanding of how businesses really operate and become more successful competitive organizations.  Grounded in the liberal arts, the programs provides comprehensive exposure to business concepts and applications in the areas of Management, Accounting, and Business Information Systems. By emphasizing teamwork and the development of leadership skills through practical business applications, students develop international perspectives relevant and applicable to the global marketplace.

Program Options in the areas of Accounting, Business Administration and Business Information Systems

Accounting:

A Bachelor of Science in Accounting provides students with knowledge in financial and managerial accounting, auditing, taxation, and microcomputers.  Students are required to study and gain proficiency in the English language, mathematics, computer science, the arts, the humanities, and natural and social sciences.  By understanding the science of accounting while having a depth of knowledge in the liberal arts, students are prepared for staff level positions in various types of business organizations. For those students anticipating a career in accounting, a BS in Accounting from Eastern provides great preparation for graduate school and CPA certification.

The Accounting Minor is available to all university students and provides flexibility in career options by enriching the understanding of accounting principles in real-world applications.

Business Administration:

A Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration incorporates more than a traditional understanding in business concepts.  Students are encouraged to focus their studies by obtaining a Concentration in one or two of six practical areas of business: Finance, Human Resource Management, Management, Marketing, Operations Management, or International Business.  With specific field concentrations, students prepare either for careers in today’s competitive business environment, to start their own business, or to continue on to graduate school.

The Business Administration Minor is open to students in all courses of study at ECSU.  This minor acquaints students with practical concepts of real-world business so that they will be more prepared to enter into any career they choose.

Business Information Systems:

The  Business Information Systems Major focuses on the understanding of how information systems can be used to improve the performance of an organization and how these systems can be administered. It incorporates the fundamentals of information technology, business and organizational management.

The minor in Business Information Systems Management provides excellent practical skills to complement majors . It needs only 9 credits that are different from the Business major.

The interdisciplinary minor in Social Informatics opens wider opportunities for those graduating with a liberal arts degree. It covers also courses from Sociology and Environmental and Earth Sciences.

The Minor in Management Information Systems (offered in cooperation with the Department of Computer Science) aims to prepare students with a mix of programming and business skills.

A Certificate in BIS and a concentration on BIS Management in the Bachelor of General Studies degree are also offered (see the School of Continuing Education for details).

Career opportunities for graduates - life after Eastern CSU and what our graduates say about the department:

After graduation as Business Administration, Accounting, or Business Information Systems majors, students pursue the many job opportunities available in dynamic fields such as banking, financial services, accounting, business administration, non-profit organizations and human resources.  Through ECSU’s business programs and individual internships, students acquire a competitive edge in real-world business.

Eastern business students are very well prepared.  They tend to be more independent and self-directed.  When we get an Eastern student we know we can give them ore responsibility and they will run with it.”
Lora Obsen, Director of Volunteer resources, American Red Cross

"I've really enjoyed my time spent at Eastern and am grateful for the advice and counsel on school related matters and any potential problems. All of this contributes to how I go around praising ECSU and the BIS program when I get asked what my major is."
Jonathan Wilson, BIS Graduate, December 2005, BIS Club President 2005

The interns who have worked with us over the years have helped us challenge the way we think.  They bring a fresh perspective and approach to the projects they work on and very often come up with idea or suggestion we might have missed.”
Linda Riquier, Owner, L&R Marketing, LLC

Veronika Popel ’97 worked as in intern at The Savings Institute, and was hired as a marketing assistant when she obtained her degree.

“Thanks to the training and skills that Veronika received as a Business Student at Eastern we were able to effectively develop Power Point Presentations.  We have found them to be more professional and better received.  We had never used Power Point before.  Veronika started to train others and now employees are taking classes.”
Rheo Brouillard, President, The Savings Institute
