Coordinator: Dr E. Scott The Masters of Science degree in Organizational Management focuses on individual behavior, group dynamics, organizational processes and structure, and their interactions within an organization by developing the student’s capacity for transformative leadership in a small-classroom environment. By learning collaboratively through reflective practice that places students outside their “comfort zone” leadership and partnership skills are acquired. The MSOM program is designed to enhance an individual’s ability to deal with the dynamics of complex organizations at supervisory and project management positions. The program assumes professional work experience as a pre-/co requisite as admission into the program. The Master of Science in Organizational Management is a degree for professionals in management, in both the private and public sectors, who seek to expand their knowledge and enhance their careers.
In 1999, ESCU’s School of Education and Professional Studies implemented an on-site cohort program in Organizational Management. The program offers an accelerated curriculum design that allows students to complete their degree in two years, in partnership with large business in eastern Connecticut. Students pursue their studies part-time, with maximum coordination with their workplace responsibilities. Students develop competencies valuable for their careers and their organization while completing a high quality, unique degree program in two years. Courses are held in their workplace, minimizing travel and other hassles associated with commuting to a campus. The cohort provides students with a support group and allows for academic cohesiveness. As fully registered ECSU students, cohort members can access on-line journals and other services from ECSU’s new, state-of-the-art J. Eugene Smith Library. Program Competency Expectations Upon Completion:
ECSU’s MSOM admission is offered on a limited, competitive basis; no more than 25 students will be admitted per semester. All applicants must have completed their Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 2.70 GPA, two letters of recommendation, a Case Study Analysis, and evidence of extensive work experience. Their record must show evidence of professional promise and ability to do graduate-level study. All students must submit:
1. A completed application accompanied by a nonrefundable $40.00
application fee. Materials must be received in the Graduate Division office before acceptance into a program can be granted. Upon evaluation by the Dean of Education and Professional Studies, students will be notified in writing of their admission to the Graduate Program. At that time, students will be assigned an advisor and will be expected to complete a written program of study within three (3) months.
Acceptance of graduate course work taken prior to admission is conditional
upon review by the assigned graduate advisor and approval by the Dean.
Students must formally request that courses taken prior to application to
the graduate program be accepted. This must be written into the student’s
plan of study. Students are expected to work closely with an advisor in
completion of their programs. Program Completion Requirements Once accepted into the program students must complete a total of 36 credits, including 15 of core classes. The MSOM program culminates with either a Comprehensive Examination or an independent thesis that must be approved by a faculty advisor.
