FOUR IN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HONORED BY LITTLE EAST Mosley earns all-conference honors for third time; Brunet named Rookie-of-the-Year WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Junior forward Sandy Mosley (GOSHEN) is one of four women’s basketball players recognized by the Little East Conference with a season-ending award.
Mosley became the sixth player in program history to be named to the all-conference team as many as three times when she repeated as a first-team selection. Additional honorees included freshman guard Kate Brunet (BRISTOL), who became the program’s seventh Rookie-of-the-Year selection, second-team all-conference pick Lindsey Karsmarski (MERIDEN), and all-rookie team pick Nicky Morey (COLUMBIA). Brunet was also a member of the five-player all-rookie team, tabulated for the first year. A redshirt junior, Mosley led Eastern in scoring for the second straight year with an 11.4 average and was second in rebounding (5.9) and third in three-point field goals (17). In the conference, Mosley is currently ranked ninth in scoring, eighth in rebounding and tenth in field goal percentage.
This year, Mosley surpassed the 1,000 career point plateau and finished the season with a 90-game career total of 1,104 points – seventh all-time. After appearing in the first six games of the year as a redshirt freshman in 2002/03, Mosley was a second-team all-conference pick in 2003/04 and first-teamer last year. Brunet finished second on the team in scoring (9.1 ppg.) and also averaged 4.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists and shot 47.2 per cent from the floor. She moved into a starting role in the fifth game of the season and started every game until suffering a season-ending knee injury Feb. 11 against UMass Dartmouth. She missed the final two games of the regular season and all three conference playoff matches. A first-time all-conference selection, Karsmarski started all 27 games in which she appeared this year, sharing the team lead with Morey with an average of 27.1 minutes per game. Karsmarski was third on the team in scoring (8.3) and assists (2.0) and led the team for the second straight year in three-point field goals (57). Last year’s conference leader in three-point field goals per game, Karsmarski’s average of 2.04 this year again leads the conference. Last year’s conference leader in three-point field goal percentage, Karsmarski is currently rated second in that department with a percentage of 37.7. Karsmarski’s three-point field goal total this year is a career high and is the third-highest season total in program history. During the season, Karsmarski had a three-point field goal in her first 12 games, extending her consecutive game total to 29 – the second longest total in program history. She also tied her program game record with seven three-points in a game Jan. 21 at UMass Boston. Karsmarski’s career total of 135 three-point field goals in a 98-game career ranks her third all-time, two ahead of Joanna Debicki and 36 behind all-time leader Kristen Brown. Morey was the only Eastern player to start all 28 games this year and tied Karsmarski for the team lead in minutes per game (27.1). She averaged 7.2 points, led all regulars with a 76.7 free-throw percentage, and was third in rebounding (5.1) and assists (3.8). Her assist average rated her fourth in the conference, first among freshmen. University of Southern Maine senior forward Ashley Marble repeated as conference Player-of-the-Year and Southern Maine head coach Gary Fifield was named the Coach-of-the-Year for the fifth straight season. Ranked first in Division III, the Huskies won their tenth straight conference tournament title with a 71-55 win over Eastern Feb. 26. In 20 years of conference competition, Eastern has had 47 all-conference selections, 26 of which have been first-team picks. Eastern concluded its 12th season under head coach Denise Bierly with a 21-7 record – its fifth 20-win season in the last six years. The Warriors shared second place in the final conference standings with a 9-5 record and as the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament, won two games to reach the championship game. The Warriors missed post-season play for the second straight year.
