Monday, Dec. 5, 2005 THREE CITED BY LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE Pavia and Zagura in track and Morey in w-basketball cited for play last week
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Three members of winter teams have been cited by the Little East Conference for their performances during the week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4. AT RIGHT: David Pavia Senior sprinter David Pavia (STAMFORD) and junior thrower Matthew Zagura (ELLINGTON) were recognized in indoor track and field as the conference’s first weekly male track and field Athlete-of-the-Week, respectively, while freshman point guard Nicky Morey (COLUMBIA) was honored as women’s basketball Rookie-of-the-Week in the second weekly report.
AT LEFT: Matthew Zagura Zagura opened the season by winning the weight throw (48-9 1/2) for the third time at this meet and the shot put (48-0) for the second time in three years at this meet. Both distances qualified him for the New England Division III and ECAC championships. It marked the fourth time that Zagura as been similarly honored by the conference, following selections twice during his freshman year and once a year ago. The team returns to action Saturday at the Harvard University Invitational.
Morey led the Warriors to a perfect 3-0 week. As a starter in every game during the week, she averaged 9.3 points and 3.7 rebounds in an average of 22.0 minutes and added seven assists and eight steals. She was 6-for-9 from the floor (66.7 per cent) and 16-for-18 from the foul line (88.9) in the three games. In a 69-61 non-conference win over Salve Regina last Tuesday, the 5-foot-7 player was 8-for-10 from the floor, including 8-for-9 in the final six minutes. She helped the Warriors open their conference season Saturday with a 74-51 win over UMass Boston when she had 14 points on 3-for-4 FGs and 8-for-8 FTs and contributed five steals. AT LEFT: Nicky Morey This season, Morey has started all six games for the 5-1 Warriors, averaging 8.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.7 steals in an average of 24.7 minutes and is shooting 61.9 per cent (13-for-21) from the floor and 75.9 per cent from the foul line. She leads the Warriors in steals, free throws (22) and attempts (29) and is second in percentage. The women’s basketball team hosts the No. 3 nationally-ranked University of Southern Maine Saturday at 1 p.m. in conference action. |
