LOSS TO POMONA-PITZER IS BASEBALL'S THIRD STRAIGHT

Esposito sharp in four-inning start, but Warriors can’t solve freshman

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Senior righty Joe Esposito (East Haven) allowed only one hit in a four-inning start, but baseball could not solve Pomona-Pitzer Colleges freshman righty David Colvin in a 4-1 loss Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

A loser of three straight, Eastern (3-4) commited infield errors in the fifth and sixth innings that accounted for three unearned runs and helped Pomona-Pitzer (15-3) make the most of just seven hits and snap a three-game losing streak at the hands of Eastern.

The Sage Hens capitalized on two Eastern errors, two walks and four hits to score the go-ahead runs in the fifth and add two insurance runs in the sixth against freshman righty Ronnie Newkirk (New Milford). Newkirk surrendered three hits and walked one in the fifth, when Pomona-Pitzer capitalized on one Eastern error. With two out and no on in the sixth, the hosts  chased Newkirk following a double by No. 8 hitter Scott Stroup in favor of first-year sophomore righty Chris Wojick (Uncasville). Another Eastern infield error plated two runs.

Colvin went the distance to win his sixth game without a loss, allowing only seven hits and walking none and giving up only one extra-base hit. The Warriors combined three of their hits in taking a 1-0 lead in the second, with No. 9 hitter Andrew Magliola (East Haven) stroking a two-out RBI single that drove in freshman second baseman Pat Smith (Milford, PA), who had singled.

Smith and senior third baseman Trey Bongiovanni (Meriden) each had two hits for Eastern, which went down in order in four innings.

Eastern visits Whittier College Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET.
