MEN'S TRACK BAGS FIFTH STRAIGHT LITTLE EAST TITLE

Warriors take nine  firsts, set meet record for points and winning margin

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The men's track and field team won eight individual events and one relay, and relied upon superior depth to capture its fifth consecutive Little East Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship Saturday in the ninth annual event, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Eastern broke its own meet point record by one, collecting a record 219 points for a record 109-point victory over runner-up University of Southern Maine (110). University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (98) was third, Rhode Island College (93) fourth and Keene State College (74) fifth.

Westfield State College remained the only champion in the nine-year history of the New England Alliance Championship, defeating runner-up Eastern 193-155.50. The Warriors have placed second to Westfield in alliance scoring five straight seasons.

Five members of the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference join five members of the Little East to make up New England Alliance scoring.

In all, Eastern competitors took the top four spots in Little East scoring at 200 meters, the top two at 100 meters, three of the top five in the triple jump and hammer throw, three of the top four in the javelin, four of the top six in the discus, four of the top eight in the shot put, two of the top three in the long jump, and three of the top six in the pole vault.

In Little East Conference scoring, Matthew Zagura (Jr./Ellington) repeated as champion of the shot put, discus and hammer while David Pavia (Sr./Stamford) repeated as 100 meter champion and also took his first 200 meter individual title. All-America sprinter David Nicholson (Sr./Windsor) claimed his third straight title at 400 meters and first-year competitor Archie Joseph (So./Livingston, NJ) became the program’s first javelin champion. Rory Maxwell (Jr./Wallingford) won his second pole vault title in three years.

Eastern won the the 4x100 relay for the fifth time, setting a conference and program record of 42.82 in the process.  This year’s contributors were Joseph, Tope Ayeni (So./Lagos, Nigeria), Pavia and Nicholson.

Nicholson at 400 meters (48.45) and Maxwell in the pole vault (15-0)  also established conference meet and program records.

Eastern competes at the Division III New England Championship this weekend at Springfield College.
