BASEBALL'S HOBBES NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT
Sophomore is one of four New England DIII picks named to first team
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Sophomore Tristan Hobbes (Utica, NY) has been named one of 12 first-team selections to the College Division District I Academic All-District Baseball Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
All first-team picks from the nation’s eight districts are eligible for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America consideration.
A left-handed hitting first baseman, Hobbes has accumulated a 3.70 grade-point average through his first three semesters as a Communication and History/Social Science major. He is pursuing a career either in sports broadcasting or teaching.
As a three-sport athlete at Notre Dame High School in Utica, Hobbes was a member of the National Honor Society and received an Excellence Award in both history and French. He is the son of Ed and Maryjoanne Hobbes.
As a first baseman at Eastern this year, Hobbes has been named first-team All-New England and first-team All-Little East Conference for the Warriors, who open play in their 14th national tournament Friday afternoon. Hobbes is batting .339 with 56 hits, four home runs and 52 RBI. He is second on the team in RBI. Defensively, he leads the club in putouts (333) and chances (391) and is second in fielding average (.989).
“Tristan is a great young man, he’s done an excellent job on the field and in the classroom,” praised Eastern head coach Bill Holowaty. “He gives everything he has, and he’s very deserving of this honor. He’s a quiet leader who is respected in the classroom and on the baseball field. Tristan is a gentleman and a quality young man” added Holowaty, “and I’m proud of him.”
In last weekend’s NCAA Division III New England Regional Tournament championship game, Hobbes hit a first-inning grand slam to spark the team to an 18-3 win over Keene State College.
Selections to the Academic All-District Team come from Division II and III institutions located in New England and New York. Hobbes was one of only four student-athletes selected to the first team from a Division III school located in New England. He was the only player from the Little East Conference and only player from a state school chosen to the 12-person first team. Hobbes’ GPA ranked fifth-highest among the first-team selections. Ten individuals were also named to the second team.
