Tuesday, December 12, 2006 ZAGURA ECAC DIVISION III TRACK ATHLETE-OF-THE-WEEK On basis of third-place finishes at Harvard, he is selected tops in “field” events WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Senior Matthew Zagura (Ellington) has been named ECAC Division III Field Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending Sunday, it was announced Tuesday. Zagura was selected for the honor based on his third-place finishes in the 35 pound weight and shot put events at Saturday’s Harvard University Invitational, and was eligible after being named to the identical honor by the Little East Conference. It was his second straight Little East honor this year, seventh of his career. Zagura, the program recordholder in the weight (55-5) and shot put (52-1 ¾), was the first Division III finisher in both the weight and shot put at Harvard. In a field of 39 in the shot, he recorded a throw of 49-2 ½ as one of only three participants to reach the 15 meter mark. In the weight, Zagura was among five competitors to reach 16 meters, registering a mark of 53-5 ¾ in a field of 31. It was the 14th time in his career he has thrown the weight at least 50 feet. In the first meet of the season Dec. 2 at Wesleyan, Zagura has already qualified for regional post-season competition in the Division III and Open New England and ECAC meets. Eric Theiss, a sophomore sprinter at Oneonta (NY) State College, was picked as the ECAC’s Track Athlete-of-the-Week. Candidates for the ECAC award are chosen from all ECAC member institutions, which are located between Maine and Maryland. Eastern competes at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Invitational Jan. 20. |
