Monday, October 16, 2006 SOUSA LITTLE EAST'S OFFENSIVE PLAYER-OF-WEEK Warriors continue weekly volleyball dominance with seventh selection WILLIMANTIC, Conn. –Middle blocker Emma Sousa (Jr./Coventry) has been named the Offensive Player-of-the-Week in the Little East Conference in women’s volleyball for the third time in the last five weeks, announced Monday. The 5-foot-11 inch third-year player led Eastern (22-8) to five wins in six outings last week. She averaged 5.00 kills in 21 games and attacked at .408 and served at .959 on 73 attempts with four service aces. She also had 14 blocks and 31 digs. Sousa was named to the all-tournment team at the MIT Quad Saturday when Eastern won two of three maches, losing to MIT, ranked first in New England. In a four-game win over Colby-Sawyer Saturday at the MIT Quad, she had 21 kills and a .606 attack pct. and added 21 more kills and a .359 attack pct. in a four-game home win over Clark University Sunday. This year, Sousa has appeared in 108 of 109 games and leads the team in kills per game (4.17), attack percentage (.329) and blocks (0.94). She has 81 block assists this year, 20 shy of the program season record, set in 1999. The win over Colby-Sawyer was the team’s 20th of the year, marking the 24th time in the last 27 seasons that the Warriors have reached that total. In addition to Sousa this season, setter Priscilla Dougherty (Jr./Island Park, NY) has been named Offensive Player-of-the-Week (Oct. 1) and defensive specialist Marianna Capomolla (Sr./Stamford) has been named Defensive Player-of-the-Week three times (Sept. 24, Oct. 1 and Oct. 8). Last year, Eastern shared the conference regular-season title and went on to win the playoff championship as the No. 1 seed. The Warriors are the only unbeaten team (5-0) in the conference this year. They close out their regular-season conference schedule Oct. 28 with matches against Massachusetts Dartmouth and University of Southern Maine (both currently 0-3 in the LEC) at Gorham, ME. Eastern hosts Wesleyan University Wednesday at 7 p.m. |
