ORME, SUMECKI HONORED BY LEC IN W-SOCCER

Recognized for offensive and defensive play, respectively, last week

WILLIMANTIC, Conn.Senior forward Jenn Orme (CENTEREACH, NY) and senior keeper Allison Sumecki (NORTHFORD) have been honored as the Little East Conference women’s soccer Offensive and Defensive Player-of-the-Week, respectively, for their performances during the week of Sept. 19-25.

Orme had three goals and an assist in a 2-0 week and Sumecki played all but four minutes in goal and recorded both victories over No. 22 nationally-ranked Wheaton College, MA (1-0) on the road Wednesday and over Massachusetts Dartmouth (4-3)  at home Saturday.

                                                                                                          JENN ORME

Orme scored the only goal of the match early in the first half as the Warriors became the first team in 50 matches to defeat the Lyons on their home field in the regular season. She also scored the first two goals and later added an assist in the conference win over UMass Dartmouth.

It is the third time in her career that Orme has received this honor, following previous selections on Nov. 3, 2003 and Sept. 20 of last year. In 2003, she scored the only goal when Eastern defeated the University of Southern Maine to clinch a share of the conference regular-season title. She was recognized last year after scoring three of the team’s seven goals in two matches, including the game-tying goal in a 1-1 overtime tie with No. 12 Amherst College.

Through games of Monday, Orme has started all nine matches for the 4-4-1 Warriors and shares the team lead in assists (4) and is second in goals (5) and points (14).

Against Wheaton, Sumecki became the first keeper since 1996 to shut out Wheaton on its home field in the regular season. She equalled her career-high of nine saves in that match, denying Wheaton two one-on-one opportunities in the final minutes to post the first full match shutout of her career. She made four saves , allowing only one goal against UMass.

                   ALLISON SUMECKI

It is the first time that Sumecki has received the honor in her career.

This year, Sumecki has appeared in all nine matches, with seven starts and a 3-3 record with one tie. She has a 1.33 goals-against average and .830 save percentage.

It marks the second straight week that Eastern players have received the conference’s offensive and defensive honor. For the week ending Sept. 18, senior forward Caitlin Buzzell (MANCHESTER) gained offensive accolades and first-year sophomore back Heather-Lynn Spada (HEBRON) the defensive award.

Eastern returned to action Tuesday with a non-conference match at Bridgewater State College at 4 p.m.
