Frequently Asked Questions
1. How do I report a conflict with a faculty member?
All conflicts should be addressed within your department and school.  If you have a conflict with a faculty member, you should first try to resolve the matter between you and that faculty member.  If you feel the situation has not been resolved to your satisfaction, you may contact the department chair of your major course of study (e.g. Dr. Carmen Cid is the Department Chair for the Biology Department) to report the conflict.  The name of the department chair may be found on the department's web page, your ECSU Student Handbook, or you may call the department directly.  If the situation is not resolved at the department chair level, you may contact the associate dean of your school (e.g. Arts and Sciences, Education and Professional Development or Continuing Education) to resolve the issue before the matter is brought to the dean's attention.
2. How do I change my academic advisor?
You should contact the Academic Advisement Center.  They will work with you to find an advisor you will feel comfortable with.  If you require academic advisement over the winter and summer breaks, and your regular advisor is unavailable, you may contact the advisement center and they will assign you another available faculty member.
3. I think I am due to graduate but I am not sure if I have enough credits to graduate.   Who should I contact?
You should contact the Registrar's office with all questions regarding your academic standing, which includes GPA qualifications for academic awards and satisfying academic requirements to graduate.  An academic audit is performed once a student submits to the Registrar an application to graduate in their senior year.   Please contact the Registrar for details and deadlines for submission of the application to graduate.
4. I withdrew from classes last semester and met the deadline to receive a refund on my tuition but I keep getting a bill requesting payment for the full amount.  Who should I contact to resolve this issue?
You should contact the Bursar/Cashier's office to resolve any refund/billing issues.
5. How do I find out details about the commencement ceremony?
All details regarding commencement can be found here.
6. I have been placed on academic probation. Does this mean I'm going to be dismissed??
Not if you fail to attain the required GPA during the probationary semester.  Probation serves as a warning to students that they need to improve their present GPA.  Students placed on academic probation must participate in an academic intervention program administered by the Academic Advisement Center or the Learning Center.  You must meet with your assigned probation counselor to review program requirements, course selection, credit loads and other relevant information.  Please be aware that the academic dean of your school has the prerogative to dismiss any student who is not making sufficient progress toward a degree and can require a student to attend in part-time status and/or change/revise his/her plan.
7. I don't agree with the grades I received. Who should I appeal to?
You should first discuss the grade with the instructor to try and work towards an amicable resolution within three weeks after receipt of the grade.  If the results are not to your satisfaction, the procedure for appealing the grade is outlined in your ECSU Student Handbook.
8. I am due to graduate in December. Will there be a commencement ceremony then?
Yes.  A December ceremony/reception for undergraduates and graduates will be held on December 8, 2006and you may also participate in the May 22, 2007 commencement ceremony.
