This is a view of the east edge of the arboretum adjacent to a new housing development where the silt fences failed, and fill and silt have overrun the leaf litter. This buries the tubers, rhizomes, corms, and other perenniation structures of forest species. This can exterminate populations of some species, given that this site is near our limited stand of lady slipper orchids (Cypripedium acaule) and rare Isotria verticillata.
