On this log you see the reproductive structures (white) of a wood-decay fungus. This may be Schizophyllum. Most of the fungus is under the bark feeding on whatever live tissue remains. These reproductive structures (basidiocarps) emerge through cracks in the bark and shed astronomical numbers of spores into the air.
